A 94-year-old missionary who has made the lives of hundreds reflect his own last name, he was Charles Henry Bright, 43 Chilverton. Even to the last moment, he carried on his life's theme as he uttered: "Sickness comes to people so they can see the kindness in others' hearts." He was ill but a few days. He was born In London, England, and as a young man served In the English army. He was in his early twenties when he came to America, and as he had very strong religious convictions, he traveled all over America as an independent missionary, as he believed a Christian should not tie himself up with any denomination, but be free to serve all peoples. His girlhood sweetheart, Martha Emmalaid Forbes of Illinois, joined him in Mexico and they worked together in religious teaching and missionary work both in South America and in Mexico. Mrs. Bright was the first white woman in Peru at that time, and was gazed at curiously by the natives. They started a mission in Peru which is still flourishing. Mr. Bright was a scholar by nature, and entirely self-taught. He learned Greek and Hebrew and Spanish and other languages needful in their travels. They lived by faith and made friends wherever they went. Upon their retirement from the foreign field some 33 years ago, they came to Santa Cruz and have lived here since and continued their religious work in their home. Each Sunday morning Mrs. Bright played the organ and her husband preached. Sunday afternoon they would have communion service. In addition to his teaching in his home, Mr. Bright has been writing and publishing religious articles, and has published a little leaflet, "The Passing Hour," each week. He had his own little printing press and did all his own "setting up" and printing. His last sermon appeared in his publication just two weeks ago: "The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing is of the Lord." In commenting on present World war conditions in his last message, Mr. Bright said things were much worse nearly 100 years ago in England, and he did not agree with people when they deplored the "awful conditions" today in America. His wife and companion of many years and their adopted daughter, Mrs. Katie Adair Hulman, survive. Mr. Bright was an outstanding figure in Santa Cruz, for he wore a long white beard, which he never cut, and until a few months ago, drove his automobile any place he wished to go. Funeral services will be held at White's chapel Saturday morning at 10 o'clock and interment will be in Oakwood cemetery. Rev. M. M. Kilpatrick will conduct the services.
