Delay, 1924. Charles Henry Metteer is a prominent and noteworthy, retired pioneer agriculturist and horticulturist. He was seven years old when his parents moved to Iowa, and nineteen when his family heard the wonderful reports of the discovery of gold in the mines of the Golden State, California. This was apparently in the latter part of 1850 and he and his family started across the plains by ox team, going by way of the Sante Fe Route. The Metteer family, at that time, were members of the Brewsterite sect, a baranch of the Mormon Church. The members of their wagon train were originally made up of this sect, most of whom were immigrating to Colorado where they hoped to enjoy religious freedom. The Metteer's left this group in Colorado and continued to San Diego where they arrived in 1851. It appears that there was some friction, either enroute to Colorado, or in Colorado, for the Metteer family gave up their Brewsterite religious beliefs upon their arrival in San Diego. After arriving in San Diego, Charles H. Metteer engaged in the occupation of driving a six-mule team for the government on a run from San Diego to Fort Yuma, Arizona. He continued to work until his family moved to Marysville, California in 1852. Instead of going to Marysville with his parents, Charles went to the Salmon River in Sierra County where he engaged in prospecting and mining until 1859. He was among the first miners to use the hydraulic method of mining. Upon returning from mining the Salmon River, he rented a farm near Live Oak, in Sutter County, where he engaged in farming. Oddly enough, it was during this period in his farming life that he was one of the first to take up the fight against hydraulic mining. In 1865, having married Mary Jane Donaldson Boynton, he purchased the land he was renting. The purchase consisted of 540 acres for which he paid $4.10 an acre. The property was part of the Larkins grant and was thickly covered with brush and oak timber. In 1885 Charles and Mary Jane Metteer sold 160 acrees of their land and built a large two-story brick home. They also sold 54 acres to Charles' step-son (presumably Edward Allen Boynton). It is interesting to note that at the publication 1924 of the History of Yuba and Sutter Counties, Charles H. Metteer would have been 93 years old. The publication states that he has an unusual amount of interest in hte topics of the day and reads and talks fluently on many topics. He has always been an optomist, in spite of the many hardships he had endured through life is a genial and jovial man. He still resides at the Metteer home, which he built in 1885 out of red brick, burnt on the ranch, and has the distinguished honor of being the oldest pioneer settler in Live Oak. In politics he is a republican and he does his utmost to give his support to the best measures and movements proposed for the benefit of the community." The date of Charles Henry metteer's death is not known at this time. Second article found about Charles, posted by wilsonphy George H Metteer did not travel to Oregon with his father in 1855. Records indicate that he did not live with his father in Marysville in 1852, but rather traveled to Sierra County where he did prospecting and mining until 1859. In 1862 he rented a farm in Sutter Sounty and in 1865 purchased 540 acres of land, which is said to have been 12 miles north of Yuba City on the Feather River (1 mile east of Live Oak in Sutter County). When Charles married Mary Jane Donaldson Boynton she was a widow of William T. Boynton and had two sons, Thomas Humboldt Boynton and Edward Allen Boynton. The Boyntons had a ranch at the time of Wiliam's death, presumably of pneumonia. Charles and Mary Jane had five children, two who died before they were eight years old. Presumably all five children were born on the Metteer ranch in Live Oak, California. In 1885, Charles Henry and Mary Jane sold 160 acres of their property and built a large two story brick home. At the same time, they also sold 54 acres to Edward Allen Boynton.
