Read More	Schuyler Sun Schuyler, Colfax Nebraska June 14, 1923 CHARLES SMITH CALLED AFTER LINGERING ILLNESS Charles Smith, a resident of Colfax County and of Schuyler for more than a half century, passed away at his home in this city Wednesday morning after a lingering illness due to chronic diabetes. Some fifteen years ago, Mr. Smith became afflicted with the disease and retired from active farming and came to Schuyler to make his home a few years later. He had been under the constant care of a physician for several years. He went to Colorado Springs, Colorado last July in hopes of benefitting his health. A second trip was made to Colorado the latter part of last September. His health not benefited in the west, Mr. Smith returned to his home in Schuyler at Thanksgiving time. He was confined to his bed for nearly 8 weeks. All the human power and tender loving care could do were done in his behalf but all was to no avail for it was willed that his life’s journey was soon to be brought to its close. Charles Smith was born near Johnstown, Pennsylvania on June 5, 1863, and passed away at Schuyler, Neb. On June 13, 1923, at the age of sixty years and eight days. When a lad of four years, he came west with his parents and settled on a farm southwest of Schuyler. Here he resided until the spring of 1814 when he moved his family to Schuyler. He was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Smith at Columbus on February 27, 1889. To this union were born 4 sons and 1 daughter. One son, Chester Stephen, passed away in 1898, when 5 years of age. The surviving relatives are the widow, one daughter, Mrs. John Witt, three sons, Herbert C. Smith, Cloyd J. Smith, and Ralph E. Smith, all of Schuyler and the following brothers and sisters: Jacob Smith of Larkspur, Colo., William Smith, also a resident of Colorado, Mrs. Jacob Kifer of Schuyler, Mrs. Katherine Kohler of Rodgers, Mrs. Polly Abart of Schuyler, and Mrs. Sarah Freidline of Boise, Idaho. Mr. Smith was a member of the school board of the Smith center school district for a number of years. He was elected to the city council in Schuyler a few years ago and for several years served on the election board. He was a member of Pallas Lodge No. 110, Knights of Pythias. Mr. Smith was identified with the Methodist Episcopal church for a number of years, living an honest Christian life in the open sight of god and of man. The funeral services will be held from the late residence Friday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. Shacklock, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Interment will be made in the Schuyler cemetery.
