He came from there to the Odebolt community settling in Clinton township in the Bethel neighborhood, which has been his home continuously. He was married to Olive Chandler at her parental home in Wheeler township Jan. 1, 1890. Five children were born to this couple, all living today. Mr. Smith is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Charles H. Smith, 90, a long time resident of this area died at his home Thursday morning, January 24. He had been bedfast after falling and fracturing his hip in a fall at his home November 14. He was hospitalized in Omaha and at Schaller before being brought home. His daughters, Mrs. George Campbell, Mrs. Fay Gilbert and Mrs. Sadie Runkle took care of him. Charles H Smith was born October 16, 1866, near DeWitt in Clinton county, Iowa, just one year and a half after the death of Abraham Lincoln. He was but 12 years old when the family moved to Sac county in 1878. At the age of 15 Mr Smith joined the Methodist church. This took place at the Fox school house where a branch of the Methodist church had been established by Circuit Riders. Later, in 1889 this little congregation built the Bethel Methodist church. Charles Smith became a charter member of this fellowship. Years later, when the Bethel church disbanded, he transferred his membership to the Odebolt Methodist church. January 1, 1890, he was united in marriage to Olive Chandler. To this union five children were born. They lived on a farm east of Odebolt until 1944 when they retired and moved to their present home on Maple street. He is survived by his widow, Olive; three daughters, Anna, Mrs Fay Gilbert of Milaca, Minn, Sadie Runkel of Odebolt, and Esther, Mrs George Campbell of La Porte, Indiana; two sons, Hobert of Pocatello, Idaho, and Lawrence of Aurora, Missouri; one sister, Mrs Mary Chandler of Chevy Chase, Maryland, who has spent quite a part of her summer with the Smiths; 11 grandchildren, and 35 great grandchildren. Friends and relatives from a distance attending the last rites included: Fay Gilbert, Wayne Gilbert and Steve Gilbert of Milaca, Minn; George Campbell, LaPorte, Ind; Mr and Mrs Forrest Chandler, Denison; Mr and Mrs Alvin Tisthammer, Storm Lake, Mr and Mrs Bill Rennum, Des Moines; Mrs Nettie Smith, Kiron; Mr and Mrs Percy Quirk, Schaller; Mr and Mrs Francis Quirk, Jefferson; Harry and Minnie Quirk, Wall Lake, Mrs Lela Draper, Mrs Oren Leonard, Mrs L T Quirk all of Lake View; Mr and Mrs Laurence Hoefling of Omaha.
