Description	:	Charles was born circa 1737. He was the son of John Hutcheson, (Hutchinson [sic]), farmer and Overseer of Roads out of Chesterfield (now Ruther Glen) as shown in the Caroline County Order Books from the mid 1740s to the mid 1750s. By June 1756 John Hutcheson [sic] is recorded as settling several accounts including one for his son Ambrose for a pot and hooks at the Thomas Partridge general store which lay to the west of Chesterfield in Hanover County. He was the son of John Hutcheson, (Hutchinson [sic]), farmer and Overseer of Roads out of Chesterfield (now Ruther Glen) as shown in the Caroline County Order Books from the mid 1740s to the mid 1750s. By June 1756 John Hutcheson [sic] is recorded as settling several accounts including one for his son Ambrose for a pot and hooks at the Thomas Partridge general store which lay to the west of Chesterfield in Hanover County. John died a few years thereafter and his home farm likely passed to Ambrose, the assumed eldest son, in accordance with English primogeniture laws. The estate was appraised in 1760. John's sons Ambrose & Charles were appointed as executors for his estate in 1761. Subsequently, Ambrose passed away in Caroline County ca. 1766 leaving a baby son, John Ambrose, who later married one Sarah Butler. Charles joined his brothers John, Richard & Peter-(12/30/1743-10/16/1820) in their immigration into the newly created Mecklenburg County circa 1767. According to family oral history he married Frances Collier. Although written proofs are sketchy due to the loss of many county documents during the war between the states, it appears circumstantially that she is the daughter of John Jr. & Elizabeth Meredith Collier. A daughter, Frances, and other family members are listed on John Collier Jr.'s 1749 will which was drafted in Hanover County & saved by a descendant. Three of the listed brothers, Capt. Thomas (died 1787 Charlotte Cty, VA), Maj. John (died 1819 Nicholas Cty, KY) & Joseph Collier, moved from Hanover County to Charlotte County on Horsepen Creek. These moves are shown on deeds between 1766-1771. Frances and Charles Hutcheson's second son's given name was Collier. In 1792 he married Maj. John Collier's daughter Mrs. Sarah Gaines nee' Collier Collier: She was widowed in 1791 by the death of Benjamin Collier, son of Capt. Thomas Collier. In 1807 Collier Hutcheson was gifted property on Horsepen Creek at the death of his father. According to the Mecklenburg County revolutionary war records & research done by Federal Judge Charles Sterling Hutcheson of Boydton, VA, Charles Hutcheson provided beef & on 12/8/1777 took an officer's oath for the Mecklenburg County Militia under the command of Capt. Ruben Vaughan & Col. Bennett Goode. Charles was possibly appointed a sergeant in Col. Gibson's 1st VA State Reg. From Dec. 1777 through May 1783 Charles Hutchinson, "enson, ingson & eson", (sic) is seen on paymaster & muster roll documents. He was serving as a Sergeant and subsequently a Quartermaster Sergeant, 1st VA State Line Reg. in the Continental Army. The army documents do not give the county origins of the soldiers, so it is difficult to prove that this person and Charles Hutcheson of Mecklenburg County were one and the same soldier. Several of the monthly muster rolls say that the sergeant signed on for service for 3 years starting March 1, 1777. The final 5/17/1783 pay roll entry states that Charles collected the back pay himself and it is signed "Hutcheson". Charles made his home on a 560 acre tract of land on the east side of Laton's Creek and west of county rd# 675 purchased 1/2 from a James Bilbo 10/13/1766 and the other half from his brother Peter Hutcheson. He later increased this plantation to 949.5 acres. This land he directed to be sold at his death so that the proceeds might be divided between his daughters. He also owned what was known as a "Quarter Plantation" in Halifax County where 15 slaves were living and that land too was sold for the benefit of his daughters. His remaining acreages were given to his sons: 460 acres on Cox Creek willed to his son John; 846 acres on Horsepen Creek, Charlotte County, VA willed to his son Collier; & 430 additional acres on Layton's Creek given to his son Joseph. This gifting is recorded in Will Book 6, Mecklenburg, County, VA. The three sons, John, Collier & Joseph, are appointed as his executors. In his November 1807 will he left no lifetime legacy or loan to his wife as would have been customary if she were still living. Frances had borne for them the following children: John H. (m. 12/23/1793- Sarah Baugh)-Moved to Montgomery Cty., TN., Collier H. (m.1. 1/19/1792- Sarah Gains Collier-his 1st cousin: m.2. 9/18/1804- Sarah Williams), Joseph H. (m.1. 11/20/1800- Rebecca Neblett: m.2. 11/17/1825- Mary Clifford Valentine), Sarah H. (m. 11/22/1786- John Hutcheson, her 1st cousin & son of Peter Hutcheson), Lucy H. (m. 1/21/1794- Charles Saunders Sims), Susanna H. 7/24/1780-9/25/1819 (m. 8/18/1800- Devereux Hightower), Martha C. H. (m.1. 1/8/1800- Dabney Phillips: m.2. 5/4/1816- Mr. Joseph Simmons), Hannah H.
