Mr. Jenkins was born Feb. 6, 1904 in Rosalie, Nebraska, a son of Lot and Bessie Jenkins. He attended schools in Osmond and Fullerton, Nebraska and the University of Nebraska. He and Ruth Leila Arrasmith, a former resident of Washington, were married Dec. 25, 1927. After serving as clerk in the Fullerton post office for ten years he moved to Ainsworth in 1939 where he served as rural mail carrier until his retirement in 1965. He was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Association, past Master of the Fullerton Masonic Order, a charter member of the Ainsworth Lions Club and a member of the United Methodist Church in Ainsworth. He also served for a number of years as town clerk in Ainsworth. A man of unusually varied interests, being an avid sportsman and hunter, skilled woodworker, beekeeper, knowledgeable fan of Dixieland Jazz, student of and collector of books on the history of the American West, and a constant follower of local and national politics, "Charlie" Jenkins is remembered for his outspoken support of community, school and political affairs, as well as for a unique, contagious sense of humor. His complete honesty was an example to the mail patrons he served and to all who knew him. Surviving are his widow and three children: Kermit C. Jenkins of Ainsworth, Quentin A. L. Jenkins of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Mrs. Wade (Rosemary) Raridon; his mother, Mrs. Bessie Jenkins of Fremont, Nebr.; brothers: Harold of Toppenish, Oregon, and Gordon of St. Edward, Nebraska; and sisters: Mrs. Leon Dudney of Fullerton, Nebraska, and Mrs. Richard Wilson of Ocala, Florida; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and two infant sisters. To celebrate with or lean upon, our friends stand beside us. Charlie Jenkins was such a friend to me. The kind you don't have many like, even if you live a long time: the kind you can exchange frivolities or your innermost thoughts with; with whom you can sit quietly, comfortably for long periods; the kind you are not able to replace when you lose them. Charlie grew up on a Nebraska farm and spent several dust bowl years wrestling with it. Some time later, he left Nebraska University to marry Ruth and work up to postmaster in Fullerton. In the late thirties, he exchanged that for a rural mail carrier job in Ainsworth. When he retired in 1968, his route patrons were all his staunch allies---including two who once stuffed a big, wild, black tomcat into their mailbox then peeked through the cracks in the barn door to watch the cat leap down Charlie's outstretched arm. Charlie was a worker and a family man. Then (I'm not sure of the order), an outdoor lover, a furniture builder and a jazz fan. His trademarks were natural integrity, enthusiasm, good sportsmanship. He had a beautiful, pealing laugh whether he hit or missed. If you make the Happy Hunting Grounds, look up Charlie. Don't look for a great big man in stature: listen for a long merry laugh. Or, he might be saying, "I'm as embarrassed as an old man breaking in a new hunting coat." Or, if somebody missed one, he might say: "I don't believe that old Model 12 Winchester has a real good ground connection." If he walks a ditch a mile long, and no birds fly out, he won't gripe. If the rain runs clear down his back and he's miles from his car, never a complaint. And if he cries a bit when he meant to laugh, everyone there will understand.
