McFarland "The last rites for Charles McFarland, who died last Friday morning, were held at Mount Olive United Brethren Church at Hayfield Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, after a brief service at the house, the Rev. Harry G. Spencer, formerly of Piedmont, W.V.; but recently transferred to near Baltimore, officiating, assisted by Rev. J.L. Neff, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of Winchester, and Rev. Cartney Anderson of Concord, W.V. "It was the largest gathering seen at a funeral at Mount Olive Church in many years, the attendance being estimated at about 600, representing various professions of life, and an unmistakable testimony of the esteem and confidence reposed in him by his friends. "Probably no other man of western Frederick was better known, and had a wider acquaintanceship than Charles McFarland, and that his friends were numbered by the scores was evidenced by the cortege that extended more than a mile along the north-western turnpike, when his remains were taken to their last resting place. "As husband and father, none were kindlier; the great ambition of his life was to raise a family of good boys and girls, and his ambitions were fully gratified, as of this large family not one strayed from his wise counsels, and he lived to see three of his sons earnestly engaged in the ministry. "When his son, the Rev. Melvin McFarland, a popular minister in the Methodist conference, met a tragic death at Cumberland, Md, the father's heart was crushed with grief; the brightness of the noon-day sun was bedimmed, and his soul seemed ever sadder, but through this and many other sad experiences this family, as the clergyman recalled during his discourse, stood side by side, and he stood with them. During his personal references the pastor stated that Brother McFarland had been one of his biggest friends in this life - they had stood together in prosperity and in the darkest hours of adversity. "His wife, who was Miss Rebecca Cooper, died 25 years ago, leaving an infant child, which added to his responsibilities. "In addition to his farming activities, Mr. McFarland was superintendent of the Northwestern turnpike for ten years, succeeding the late Daniel F. Wotring, Sr. and was highly complimented for his efficiency as a road builder. "The service throughout was most impressive. At the conclusion of the service the body was interred in Mount Olive cemetery, many lovely floral emblems covered the grave."
