Description	:	Charles Lagasse, Jr. was born November 18, 1868, in Tourcoing, near Roubaix, near Lille, France. He came to America on the French Line steamer, S.S. Washington, with his parents and baby sister, Leonie. They came to Cloud County in June 1871. Their trip was made by rail to Waterville where they were met by friends who had a team of oxen and a wagon to transport them on to Cloud County. Read More	Charles Lagasse, Jr. was born November 18, 1868, in Tourcoing, near Roubaix, near Lille, France. He came to America on the French Line steamer, S.S. Washington, with his parents and baby sister, Leonie. They came to Cloud County in June 1871. Their trip was made by rail to Waterville where they were met by friends who had a team of oxen and a wagon to transport them on to Cloud County. They settled on a homestead one-and-one-half miles southeast of Rice and lived in a dugout until a better home could be built. Charles married Louise Bertrand in the Presbyterian Church on November 18, 1890, by Rev. Bushnell. To this union was born one son, Herbert Philemon Lagasse, on September 16, 1893. Charles would comment that when he and Louise married he had $5 and a cow, and he gave $3 to the preacher. The couple worked hard, saved their money and at the time of his death, July 14, 1949, they owned the three quarter sections of land where they had lived for nearly 59-years. Louise continued to live on the farm until her death April 28, 1964. Along with his farming activities, Charles served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church, helped organize the Hill and Dale 4-H Club and received a Kansas Master Farmer Award in 1933.
