Mr. Lehr was one of the most sociable men in the city. He wanted folks to be playing games with him, visiting at his home or the other way round. He liked visitors and visiting and will be missed by the whole community. Mr. Charles Lehr was born January 1, 1874, near Kassel, South Russia. As a little boy, in the year 1879, he came to America with his parents, brothers and sisters. Having reached Yankton, they proceeded to Tyndall. After a brief stay at Tyndall, they journeyed still further west, coming to Tripp, where the parents of the deceased acquired a homestead, about a mile south of the present Charley Lehr farm. Here the deceased grew to manhood. After his marriage to Katharina, nee Nagel, he began to farm for himself on the farm place now occupied by his son Erwin. Mr. Lehr was a careful and successful farmer. About seven and one half years ago, he moved to town where he has lived ever since. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lehr, the oldest child dying in infancy. The surviving children, who are now, together with their deeply grieved mother, mourning the demise of their father are: Erwin, of Tripp; Henry, of Huron; Sam, Mrs. Earl Layton, and George, the latter three residing in Sioux City, IA. The deceased also leaves to mourn his death three brothers and one sister, namely, John of Delmont; Andrew of Gackle, ND; Jack of Canada and sister Mrs. Henry Fox of LaCrosse, WI. John and Andrew were present for the funeral and a brother of Mrs. Lehr, who lives in North Dakota. Mr. Lehr sustained a stroke on March 23, virtually paralyzing his whole right side and impairing his speech. Although he regained somewhat his former strength, he lacked vitality to fight off approaching death. He was summoned from his vale of tears last Thursday morning having reached the age of 60 years. Funeral services were held Easter Sunday, a brief service at the house and the regular church service at Emmaus Lutheran church, where the deceased was a faithful member. Rev. John Dewald spoke in German and English and the choir rendered two selections in both languages. The church could not nearly hold the many people who had come to pay their last respects to a man who enjoyed a large circle of friends and was held esteem by the community. The pall bearers where August C. Schmidt, E. J. Schmidt, August Warnke, Fred Neu, James Schutt, and Fred Collmann. The flower girls were Ruth Holz, Emma Breitkreutz, Mrs. Adeline Weisser, Ruth Scheid, Tillie Zimmerman, Bertha Heinrich, Thelma Guthmiller and Geraldine Schmiedt. The out of town relatives here for the funeral were Christ Hieb and wife of Lehr, ND; Sam Nagel, Edgely, ND; Tillie Zimmerman, Lehr, ND; Andrew Lehr and wife of Gackle, ND; Andrew Scheid and daughter Ruth of Gackle, ND; and John Lehr and family of Delmont. All the children were home for the funeral. Mr. Lehr raised a fine family, his sons and daughters being a credit to their parents and the community. They will be a source of comfort and strength to their mother. Charles and Katherina (Nagel) Lehr were married 10 Sep 1899 at Tripp, South Dakota; five children Henry (1903-1995), Samuel (1904-1974), George (1910-1991), Erwin Walter Lehr (24 Aug 1901-13 Mar 1991) and Anna Rose (Lehr) Layton (10 Dec 1907-15 Mar 1997).
