Smith, Civil war veteran and among the earliest of Humboldt pioneer citizens. At the family home on North Seventh street, which he established in March, 1876, he bore with the courage and patience characteristic of a true soldier the long months of severe suffering which marked the final chapter of his life. Charles M Smith, son of Charles Curtis and Harriet Stevens Smith, was born at Boston, Mass September 10, 1841, and had attained the age of 88 years, 9 months and 15 days. May 2, 1861, he enlisted in the 11th Massachusetts volunteers, where he served until June 24, 1864. He re-inlisted as sergeant in the 1st Regiment of New York Frontier Cavalry where he served until the close of the war. In the spring of 1866, he arrived in Lawrence, Kans., in company with his old school chum, "Billie" Brown, well known to the older citizens of Humboldt and whose death occurred here a number of years ago. At Lawrence they purchased a buckskin pony which served them to good purpose in carrying the bacon and beans, and their necessary but limited luggage and possessions. Leading the pony they walked to Humboldt. The railroads and civilizations came later on. Both filed for land at the government land office which was located in Humboldt and made this city famous. In the days of the early pioneers. They took claims in the Cuppy neighborhood a few miles southwest of Humboldt. Joining the Kansas State Militia, Mr. Smith was appointed in 1880 as sergeant major of the second regiment with which he served for a number of years, January 20, 1869, he was married to Anna M. Rice, at Humboldt, who together with their four children, Eleanor S. Smith, Clare A Gay, Charles F Smith, Edwin P Smith survived him. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Ruth Miller. Mr. Smith was a carpenter contractor through many years of his activities. For more than a quarter of a century he was bridge commissioner of this county. He possessed both education and ability and was recognized and esteemed by those with hom he came in contact. He came to Humboldt just when the Union was starting its career. Always a friend of the paper and those connected with it, he used often to contribute good historical sketches and interesting stories for its columns. He was a member of Vicksburg Post No. 72, G.A.R., and was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, member of Pacific Lodge No 29 A. F. & A.M. Funeral services in charge of Rev. C. W. Marlin and Dr. Geo. W. Horn were held from the home of his son, E. P. Smith, in this city at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon The large gathering of friends and beautiful floral tributes attested to the love and esteem for the departed. Interment was in Mount Hope cemetery.
