Smith, 83, a resident of the Wolbach community for many years, died Saturday afternoon at the St. John's Hospital in Spalding. Charles M. Smith was born at Fairfield, Nebraska April 23, 1880 to Leander and Elizebeth Smith and departed from this life at the age of 83 years 8 months and 19 days. Smith, 83, a resident of the Wolbach community for many years, died Saturday afternoon at the St. John's Hospital in Spalding. Charles M. Smith was born at Fairfield, Nebraska April 23, 1880 to Leander and Elizebeth Smith and departed from this life at the age of 83 years 8 months and 19 days. His childhood days were spent in the vicinity of Fairfield and Edgar, Nebr. April 26, 1904 he was married to Lizzie E. Chapman at Nelson, Nebraska. To this union were born four children, Lloyd of Burwell, Clarence who died in infancy, Harold of Spalding and Mabel Bandt of Cushing. In 1910 they moved from Nuckolls County to a farm east of Greeley. Nine years later they purchased a farm south east of Wolbach and they spent the remainder of their life in the Wolbach vicinity. He was a member of the Wolbach Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge. Following a light stroke he was hospitalized briefly at St. Paul then transferred for more than three months to the Spalding hospital. Fortunately Charles suffered very little during his lingering illness until he suddenly slept away at 1:45 p.m. Saturday Jan 11, 1964. He was always a kind a loving father and continually made new friends until death. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and his wife who passed on March 26, 1958. He is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Alice Stires, Atwood, Kansas and Lennie Fleckenstein of McCook, Nebr. and a host of other relatives and friends.
