Description	:	Charles Maguire was born in Monaghan County Ireland in 1799. The county is in the border region in the province of Ulster. In the 1832 Tithe Applotment survey (amount of tax payable to the Church of Ireland) Charles cultivates one acre in the townland of Anncramph, civil parish – Tehallan. It is assumed he emigrated due to the potato famine. Unknown at this time is the date of his marriage to Mary Jane Jermyn. Read More	Charles Maguire was born in Monaghan County Ireland in 1799. The county is in the border region in the province of Ulster. In the 1832 Tithe Applotment survey (amount of tax payable to the Church of Ireland) Charles cultivates one acre in the townland of Anncramph, civil parish – Tehallan. It is assumed he emigrated due to the potato famine. Unknown at this time is the date of his marriage to Mary Jane Jermyn. Their first child John was born in 1838 at Clairville, Toronto Gore Township (Peel Co.). Info on this area indicates that several Jermyn families settled there in the 1830s. That area served as a launching pad for newly immigrated families to learn farming and make some money before moving out to other townships with cheaper land. Around 1840 some Jermyn families moved to Biddulph Township close to where other Jermyn’s settled near Granton. The 1861 Census for Mono, Simcoe Co., Canada West lists Charles age 62, Farmer and Mary Jane 55 in a one ½ story log house along with their 4 sons & 4 daughters ranging in age from 10 to 23. A Heritage plaque (see photo on left) reads “Now in the Town of Mono, the community of Relessey was first settled in 1840 by Charles Maguire, an Irish immigrant. He held church services in his home until a log building was built, as a Wesleyan Methodist Church on this corner, which in turn was replaced in 1870 by the Relessey United Church, (Gothic Revival style) and was designated as an Ontario Heritage Property in 1994. There was also an Orange Lodge in the community, a blacksmith shop, a general store and a post office". By the 1871 Census Charles 72 & Mary 67 had joined the Jermyn relatives in Biddulph Twp., Middlesex North. Charles died 2 years later in 1873.
