Mystery and conjecture surround the death of Charles O. Brumfield, 47, a native of Abington, who was killed Saturday evening at Elwood by a Lake Erie & Western passenger train. Foul play is suspected by the authorities at Elwood. The many relatives in this city, who met the mother and sisters accompanying the body at the local Pennsylvania station this morning, know nothing of the circumstances. They went with the body to Abington, where the funeral services were held this morning. Vague rumors and a feeling of uncertainty that have existed since the finding of the body have taken definite form, and it is openly hinted at Elwood that Brumfield either was sandbagged and left on the tracks, or that he was thrown under the train by some assailant. Members of the Brumfield family in Elwood have shown no hesitancy in discussing the matter, and they indicate that they will begin a rigid investigation following the funeral. There is little hope of revealing the real circumstances. Robbery is Suspected. Brumfield is known to have cashed a check for $30 at a cigar store south of Elwood less than an hour before his body was found. He started for town immediately and when the body was found there was only $2 in the pockets. What became of the $28 is the question being asked. He had no opportunity to spend it. It must have been taken from him by force, is the argument, and the country is being scoured for the robber. Fifteen minutes after the train had passed a strange man called to James Claybaugh, an agent of an Elwood brewing : "Here's a dead man." When Claybaugh started towards him he added, "My name is Riley," and hastened away. Claybaugh caught a glimpse of the man and describes him as a stranger, poorly dressed and evidently a tramp. The place where the accident occurred was very dark. The condition of the dead body was another indication of foul play. Instead of falling under the train feet first, as would have been the case had he been struck with the greatest force and his arm, which had been cut off, apparently had been doubled under him. The county coroner, who rendered a verdict of accidental death may later be called to make a second investigation. Had Richmond Relatives. The scene at the station this morning was a pathetic one. Mrs. Nancy Brumfield, the aged mother of the dead man, was led to a carriage by her two daughters, Mrs. John Moore and Mrs. Frank Colvin, of Elwood, both known here. Mrs. Brumfield suffered a severe shock when she heard of the violent death of her son and she has seemed to be in a trance ever since. Sympathetic friends gathered about the party from Elwood, and all took carriages for the ride to Abington. The two sisters and the mother are all the immediate relatives who survive the deceased, although there are several in this city who are more distantly connected. Among these are Marion Brumfield, and uncle, Newton Brumfield, superintendent of the county infirmary and Clayton Brumfield, cousins, and Mrs. W.B. Dye, a cousin. Charles Brumfield was a employe of the tin plate factory at Elwood.
