PUBLICATION DATE: Thursday, May 6, 1909. . "OSCAR WILKEN DIES SUDDENLY. [Late April or early May, 1909]. Former Atlantic Nightwatchman dies at Blanca, Costilla County, Colorado, of Pneumonia after Illness of but a Day -- Leaves Wife and Two Children. . (From Monday's "Daily News"). . The word was received in this city the latter part of last week of the death of Oscar Wilkins, formerly night watchman on the city police force and a man well known in this city and vicinity. Death was the result of pneumonia after an illness of but a day, he having been taken ill on Tuesday. The interment was made there Thursday. . Deceased left here about a year ago for Blanca, after he had returned [unclear word] from another part of Colorado where he lived for a time. He did not enjoy the best health and it was largely on account of his health that he located to Colorado. He leaves his wife, who was a daughter of the late AMOS MORELAND, and two little sons. He also leaves his aged parents, C.R. Wilkins and wife. They had sold their place on South Maple and were preparing to remove to Colorado to join their son when the news of his death came. Oscar was liked by those who knew him. He was a hard working, industrious man, who sought to do right and his host of friends join the News in mourning his death. He was about 49 [?] years of age." . Research of CPM: BURIAL: According to the 1909 obituary of Charles "Oscar" Wilkins, he was buried in Blanca, Colorado, which was apparently a very small community. Therefore, it is presumed that Oscar was laid to rest in the Blanca Cemetery, in Costilla County. . SARAH "SADIE" LOU (MORELAND) WILKINS/BOHLING: . A few months after her husband's death, Sadie (Moreland) Wilkins was listed on the 1910 census as a "widow," residing at Fort Garland, Costilla County, Colorado. Her two sons, Charles and Vern (ages 16 and 10), were in the household, with their mother. Sadie and her sons then returned to Cass County, Iowa. . By 1915 Sadie has remarried and is listed on the Iowa State Census in Benton, Cass County, Iowa, with her husband, "Lou" (Nathaniel Louis "Nathan" Bohling). Sadie and her 2nd husband migrated to Montana, and resided there for the remainder of their lives. . End. . -- -- -- -- --
