Extract from "Ancestors of Ezra Bliss Church of Ferrisburgh, Vermont" by Lorraine McElroy Peirce (1964): Charles Geer Church was born October 29, 1863 in Sierra Valley, Sierra County, California. As a young man he drove oxen teams in logging camps and in the woods in Sierra and Plumas Counties. In 1898 he purchased a ranch near Loyalton where he lived the remainder of his life. On May 3, 1893 he was married to Harriet Wiltse, who was born September 1, 1869 in Poughkeepsie, New York, the daughter of Albert and Emmaline Wiltse. Charles Church was an enthusiastic lodge worker, being a charter member of the Loyalton I.O.O.F. Lodge, and he was also a member of the Sierra Valley Grange at Vinton. He died in a Reno hospital on September 12, 1944 at the age of 80 years. His wife Harriet Wiltse Church died January 10, 1947 in Portola.

He was a native of Sattley, Calif., and had come to the local hospital for treatment. Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Harriet Church of Portola. The body was accompanied to Portola for funeral services and burial, with the Ross-Burke company in charge of arrangements.
Obituary from the "Nevada State Journal" of Reno, Nevada dated 14 Sep 1944" Portola Resident Dies in Hospital Charles Church, retired farmer of Portola, Calif., died late Tuesday in a Reno hospital, and the body was accompanied yesterday to Portola for funeral services, it was announced by the Ross-Burke Company. Eighty years old, he was a native of Sattley, Calif., and had come to the local hospital for treatment. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Harriet Church of Portola.

Obituary from the "Reporter" of Portola, California dated 21 Sep 1944: Charles G. Church Charles G. Church was born in 1863 at Sattley, Sierra Nevada, California, and passed away in a Reno hospital on Tuesday September 12, 1944. He lived in Sierra Valley all of his life. In his younger days he drove oxen in logging camps and in the woods, and in his later years he enjoyed telling of his early experiences, and often wrote interesting items for the Sierra Valley News, which every one enjoyed. He was married in the early 90s to Harriet Wiltse at the Wiltse ranch at Vinton. California. In 1898 he purchased a ranch near Loyalton and lived there until the last few years, which he and his wife spent in Loyalton. Mr. Church had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for 55 years. He withdrew from the lodge at Sierraville in 1904 to become a charter member of the Loyalton lodge. He was a fervent lodge worker and used to ride horses through deep snow to attend the meetings. He was also a member of the Sierra Valley Grange at Vinton. He is survived by his wife and seven children: Mrs. George Gere of San Jose, Mrs. Elma Howes and Ezra Church of Sacramento, Mrs. Maude Fulcher of Portola, and Mrs. Edith Huntley and John Church of Loyalton. Another son, Ward, was killed in World War 1. He had eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Community church in Loyalton Saturday, September 16 under auspices of the Odd Fellows lodge, and interment was in the Loyalton cemetery.
He married Harriet Wiltse 3 May 1893 at the Wiltse Ranch in Summit, Plumas, California.
