He was born September 20, 1929, in Kirksville, Missouri, to Charles Elmer and Evaline Sizemore Downing. He married Ruth Ann Carter on September 21, 1963, at the United Methodist Church in Lancaster, Missouri. At a very young age, Ralph started at John Morrell and Co. and worked there until the plant closed in 1973. He then worked 16 years for Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1994. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; three daughters, Tracy Downing and Tina (Todd Thomsen) Downing, both of Ottumwa, Betty Lou Simmons of Oskaloosa; two sons, Ron (Jody) Downing and Don (Julie) Downing, both of Ottumwa; several grandchildren, including Todd Matthew “Tadpole” (Amanda) Downing and Tyler “Buddy” Thomsen; several great-grandchildren, including Ryder Lee Downing; a sister, Mary Ware of Ottumwa; and a brother, Paul Downing of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Elizabeth Turbett; and two brothers, Nathan and Don Downing.
