"Andy" Anderson bought the funeral chapel he managed for 20 years, he went straight to the lumber yard and purchased a length of plywood to make a sign. It read simply, "Anderson's Chapel." It was something he'd dreamed of for decades. Anderson died at home Sunday. He was 73. Anderson started in the funeral business when he was 16 years old and living on his family cattle ranch in western Nebraska. The local funeral director there needed help driving the chapel's ambulance and recruited Anderson. His first call was to retrieve a man who had died while in a farm outhouse. And what started out as a part-time job in high school became the man's lifelong profession. "It was his dream to own his own mortuary by the time he was 30," said Debra Anderson, Andy Anderson's wife of 13 years. She said it took a little longer then that to happen. After high school, Andy Anderson moved to Los Angeles to study and become a pediatrician. To pass the time until he could enroll in college and to make ends meet, he fell back on what he knew and went to embalming school, Debra Anderson said. He started out in Inglewood and by the late 1950s, had moved to Shasta County where he took a job at McDonald's Chapel. There he connected with Rudy Balma, brother of Shasta County Sheriff, John Balma. Balma owned McDonald's and they worked together for almost two decades -- Balma as owner and Anderson as funeral director from 1961 to 1981. "He was extremely good with people," said Jim Allen of Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel. "All the old ladies would come up and give him a hug." The partnership between Balma and Anderson ended when Balma sold his business to Service Corporation International of Houston. Anderson retired at that point and traveled with his first wife, Sue. He wasn't entirely retired as he substituted at area funeral homes when directors there needed an extra hand. It was at that point that Allen & Dahl called. The funeral home wanted to open a chapel in Anderson and hired Andy Anderson to do it. The decades he spent at McDonald's meant Anderson knew most of the families in town. Neil DeMars, a friend and coworker of Anderson's, said for years when people called the funeral home they would talk only to Andy. People trusted him, he said. "People came back for generations," said Debra Anderson, who worked with Andy Anderson in the 1990s. When Service Corporation International put McDonald's Chapel up for sale in 1988, Andy Anderson jumped at the chance to buy. It was his opportunity to finally own a funeral home and continue to serve the families of Anderson. "He was the honorable guy next door," said Cindy Webb, Anderson's daughter. "They felt comfortable. It wasn't a cold place to go." Anderson's son, Jim Otis agreed. "He had a very calming way to him," he said. Anderson remembered people. He treated the families who came to his funeral home like his own, they said. "Serving people was his life," Webb said. And he served them in a variety of ways. Throughout his life in Anderson, he was a member of the Anderson City Council, Anderson police commissioner, Anderson fire commissioner, director of the Anderson Chamber of Commerce and even a Boy Scout master. Anderson also was beset by health problems. He had his first heart attack at 37. He had another at 41. He suffered a stroke, had diabetes and came down with cancer. Anderson retired from the business for good in 1998. Lawncrest Chapel in Redding ultimately purchased Anderson's Chapel. The cancer, Debra Anderson said, came from all the chemicals he inhaled during his career. He died from complications of the cancer after he fell and broke a hip. But really, it was the funeral business that killed him, she said. And he was a funeral director to the end, she said. Anderson made his own funeral preparations, set for 10 a.m. Nov. 20 at Sacred Heart in Anderson. It's a new experience for Debra Anderson. "We've always been on the other side of the desk," she said.
