I found that Bob was a man of many interests, much energy, and vast pride in civic community and church affairs. I also found that when Maple Grove Church was almost down to nothing in the 1930s, he talked to a neighbor woman and said he would bring a bus load the next Sunday--- which he did. Of those he brought some still now attend. No one knows the total impact that this act might have had on the lives of people of the community. As he found in life a necessity to work and do, so perhaps he will as the poet said--- Robert Walker was born at the Walker homestead in Hudson Township July 28, 1895 and died there Wednesday evening Feb. 2, 1961 after an illness of about six weeks. January 26 - 1916 he was married to Katherine Dittmar who survives him. To them were born four children. Margaret (Mrs. Roland Kelly), Charles and George who live in this vicinity and Mary Jane at home. They have eight grand children and two great grand children. Bob, as he is best known, has lived an active and useful life, always interested in civic and community affairs. He was a member of Maple Grove Methodist Church, for eleven years he drove a school bus, for eight years he served Hudson Township as their school trustee and for one and a half years he was a member of the La Porte County Council. A devoted family and many friends will mourn his passing. Quoting the poet, one can hear him say "Think of me as withdrawn into the dimness, yours still, you mine. Remember all the best of our past moments and forget the rest, and so to where I wait, come gently on." OBITUARY C. ROBERT WALKER C. Robert Walker, 65, route 2, New Carlisle, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at his home after a six-week illness. He was born July 28, 1895 in Hudson township, La Porte county, Charles and Alice (Grover) Walker. Mr. Walker lived in the New Carlisle area all his life. He was married Jan. 26, 1916 in South Bend to Katherine Dittmar. He was a farmer, a former La Porte county councilman, a former Hudson township trustee and a member of Maple Grove Methodist church. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Kelley, Hudson Lake, and Miss Mary Jane Walker, at home; two sons, Charles and George Walker, both of New Carlisle, and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the H. C. Amen and Son Funeral home, New Carlisle. The Rev. Esther Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the New Carlisle cemetery. Friends may call on the Amen chapel after 1 p.m. tomorrow and until time of services.
