Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Rudolph Christensen Post #237, Gayville, SD. Charles Robert Donovan was born on March 11, 1923 to Charles D. and Viola (Sicard) Donovan in Volin, SD. He grew up on a farm north of Volin, helping with the farming until he joined the United Stated Navy in February 24, 1945 and was in the South Pacific Theatre of World War II. After his discharge on July 15, 1946, he returned to Volin. In 1949, he married Pricilla Rasmussen at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wakonda, SD. They had three children: Paul (Sally) of Fossil, OR, Debbie (Joe) Lazar of Long Island, NY, and Valarie (Tom) Jensen of St. Cloud, MN. Priscilla passed away in 1961. Charles and Olga Rasmussen, Priscilla’s mother, cared for this young family. He left farming in 1961 to become the manager of the USDA Farm Program. He married Betty Battin in 1972, gaining five step children: Faye Battin Schorn of Fayetteville, NC, Cathy Battin of Yankton, SD, Larry (Carol) Battin of Prescott Valley, AZ, and Greg (Colleen) Battin of Prescott Valley, AZ. Together they have 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He worked at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office for 29 years and during that time he was very active in his state (SDASCOE) and national (NASCOE) employee associations, serving as State President and National Northwest Area Director. He was nominated by his employees and was awarded the prestigious Community Service Award from the National Association of ASCS Office Employees at their convention in Wichita, KS. After his retirement in 1990, he and Betty enjoyed 12 years traveling in their RV. He was also a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees, Elks, Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He has four sisters: Frances Van Osdel and Mary Buckman, both of Yankton, SD, Sharon (Ken) Griffin of Junction City, KS, and Kathryn Kollars of Alamagardo, NM and two brothers: James “Corky” (Janice) Donovan of Ogden, UT and Richard (Mae) Donovan of Chamberlain, SD and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Viola, brother, Leo and sister-in-law, Milly, brothers-in-law, Lyle Van Osdel and Aaron Kollars, and step daughter, Margaret.
