Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Van Osdel family plot in the Mission Hill Cemetery approximately at 1:30 PM. Frances Loretta Donovan was born October 15, 1917, the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Viola Sicard) Donovan of rural Volin. She graduated from Volin High School in May, 1935 after attending all 12 years at Volin but could not attend the ceremony as the Donovan family had been quarantined at home by a measles outbreak. She recalled that, when she was seven years of age, she and her parents and older brother, Leo, walked across the new Yankton Meridian Bridge opening day in October 1924. Frances entered Sacred Heart School of Nursing in September 1935, spending one year and three months there. She was married to James Lyle Van Osdel on April 26, 1937 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. Lawrence Link, who had also married her parents. J. Lyle and Frances spent 25 years on the Van Osdel family farm seven miles east of the Yankton Post Office, managing the farm for eight other heirs. They became the parents of six children: James Lyle (Kathy), Yankton, Ruth Wall, deceased; Larry R. (Karolyn), Sioux Falls; Daniel F. (Brenda), Yankton; Kevin B. (Nan), Rapid City, and B. Kelly, deceased. After moving into their own home in Yankton in 1970, Lyle and "Frannie" remained busy. Lyle was employed by the S.D. Department of Highways Right-of-Way Acquisition Department until his retirement in 1973. Frannie was employed at the Yankton County food stamp office, at Bomgaars and spent most of her later years helping her many elderly friends with their daily living chores, as well as visiting with them in the nursing home. She also enjoyed, into her nineties, driving her red Reliant Kcar to McDonalds for morning breakfast with friends. Survivors include four of her sons and their spouses; 12 grandchildren: Jay Lyle (Meaghan) Van Osdel and daughter, Rowan and Rhiannon, Lincoln, NE; Amy Van Osdel and daughter, Jennifer Ann, Yankton; Terry (Nelson) Esteves and Maya and Cole, Rumson, NJ; Mark Wall, Seattle, WA; Jeff (Amy) Van Osdel and Hannah and Rachel, Ellicott City, MD; Pat (Beth) Van Osdel, Mankato, MN; Shannon Van Osdel, Minneapolis, MN; Dan and Andrea Van Osdel, Yankton; Kyle, Drew and Curt Van Osdel, Rapid City; and great grandsons, Jordan Bak, Mission Hill and Adrian Joseph Van Osdel, Yankton. Survivors also include sisters: Mary Buckman, Yankton, Kathryn Kollars, Alamorgordo, NM, and Sharon (Ken) Griffen, Junction City, KS; two brothers, Dick (Mae) Donovan, Chamberlain and James "Corky" (Janice) Donovan, Ogden, UT as well as many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Van Osdel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle, in 1974; her only daughter, Ruth, in 1990; her youngest son, Kelly, in 2009; as well as two of her brothers, Leo and Charles.
