Robinson, age 89, resident of Earlville community for 80 years, and who was the victim of an auto accident a week ago Saturday, died at the home of his son, John, early Sunday morning, May 12th, from injuries sustained and shock of the accident. Mr. Robinson suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck and face and hand injuries when the car in which he was riding with his grandson, Audley Robinson, overturned twice. Charles Robinson was the youngest child of a family of three sons of John and Jane Elliott Robinson, and was born in Nottinghamshire, England, Nov. 11, 1845. When seven years old he came with his parents to the United States, the family first locating in Ohio. Part of the land formerly owned by the Robinsons is in the city of Cleveland, where Robinson avenue is named in their honor. After a short residence in Ohio he accompanied his parents to North Fork township, south of Earlville, May 3, 1855. They resided upon a farm in that township belonging to their son, George, who previously emigrated to America. At the end of two years their son, William, bought twenty acres of land in Delhi township and they moved there. The father died at the age of 88 years and the mother lived to the unusual age of 93 years. He received his education in the common schools of this county and as he was reared in a farming community became familiar with the various operations that together make up agriculture. He concentrated his energies upon the cultivation of land and the raising of stock and soon became a land owner. He raised Hereford cattle and Chester White hogs for over forty years. Mr. Robinson came to Earlville before the railroad reached this section. In early days he used to walk to Dubuque to have his feet measured for boots, weeks later walking back for the boots. He was a man of unusual energy and sound business ability. For many years he held the office of road supervisor and also that of school director. until a few years ago Mr. Robinson husked corn every fall. He was well informed on all of the current topics of the day. He was married to Miss Mary E. Simons, Nov. 11, 1879, who died June 13, 1912. Two brothers, George and William, preceded him in death and one son, Frank, died a year ago. He is survived by seven children as follows: John and Mrs. Lou Gibbs at Earlville; Mrs. Henry Irons at Olin, Mrs. Robert Shearer, at Delhi, Mrs. Archie Shearer, Mrs. Zora Fee and Miss Sarah Robinson, all at Center Point, and a number of grandchildren also survive. Funeral services are being held at the home of his son, John, south of town, at one-thirty o'clock this afternoon on the farm where Mr. Robinson had spent practically all of his life. The Rev. L. C. Smith, pastor of the local M. E. church, officiated. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery, Earlville. Contributor: Jeanette Johnson (48278241)
