Cole died 3:30 Tuesday morning, November 7, 1916 at his home at 212 Blaine Street, from injuries received at about 12:45 the same morning at the local Burlington yards when he was run over by some freight cars which were being switched out the yards to clear the track for No. 6. Mr. Cole was alone when the accident occurred and the exact manner in which it happened is not known. It is said that it was perhaps 10 minutes after he was injured until found. The left foot was crushed, the hip and side injured and a scalp wound were the injuries reported by the doctor. Mr. Cole went to his home, which is only a few blocks from where he was working, about midnight for his lunch and had just returned to his work when the accident occurred. It is thought he had not left his home more than 15 minutes. At about 12:45 a.m. a string of five or six box cars were switched to the north side track to make room for No. 6, and Mr. Cole was caught on the track just north of the coal chutes and a few yards east. When No. 6 pulled in a few minutes later his cries were heard by the flagman who summoned help. Mr. Cole knew that he was seriously injured and asked for his family. They were called and immediately came to the depot, and the injured man was taken to his home at 212 Blaine Street. He was conscious almost to the end. Mr. Cole had been employed by the Burlington here for the past 23 years as a car repair man, working nights for many years. His friends are numbered by those who knew him, to whom is death was a great shock. Always cheerful and good natured, he was especially popular with the railroad men with whom he had worked for so many years. His life was marked by his devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife and five children: LaVerne, aged 18; Otis, 16; Leona, 12; Orlean, 11; Charles Jr., 1 year. The funeral services were held at First Methodist Church on Thursday afternoon, November 9th, conducted by Rev. A.O. Hinson and burial was at Prairie Home Cemetery. The floral offerings from the A.O.U.W. [Ancient Order of United Workmen] Lodge of which the deceased was a member, the Degree of Honor and the high school and others were profuse. Charles R. Cole was born in Warren County, Iowa on October 3, 1871, and came to Holdrege, Nebraska in 1893 and was married to Miss Hattie Crandall on October 20, 1897. Mr. Cole is survived by four sisters and five brothers. They are Mrs. Marie J. Berger of Holdrege, Jas. T. Cole of St. Marys, Iowa, Mrs. R.G. Nickle of Des Moines, Iowa, Ridley Cole of Winterset, Iowa, Robert Cole of Churdan, Iowa, Mrs. C.E. Harvey of Iowa, Fred Cole of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mrs. Merriman of St. Charles, Iowa, all of whom were present at the funeral. (Holdrege, Nebraska newspaper, Holdrege, Nebraska, ca.
