Description	:	Charles S. Mayer was born in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada on August 12, 1870 where he spent his childhood. At the age of 21 years, he moved to May City where he made his home and was married to Catherine Johanna Backman on February 14, 1897. To this union six children were born: Clarence of Ocheyedan, Mrs. Helen Kruckenberg, and Alvin, both of Hartley, Roy of Hawarden, Sask., Canada, Corp, Fred Mayer, U. S. Mayer was born in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada on August 12, 1870 where he spent his childhood. At the age of 21 years, he moved to May City where he made his home and was married to Catherine Johanna Backman on February 14, 1897. To this union six children were born: Clarence of Ocheyedan, Mrs. Helen Kruckenberg, and Alvin, both of Hartley, Roy of Hawarden, Sask., Canada, Corp, Fred Mayer, U. S. Army, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Robert of Hartley. Mr. and Mrs. Mayer made their home on various farms in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Canada. They moved back to a farm near Hartley the year 1935, where they resided until 1937 when they moved to their present home in Hartley. At the age of 16 Mr. Mayer gave his heart to the Lord, and while residing near May City he assisted Rev. Erskine, pastor of the Methodist church, with revival work. Later he was superintendent of the Sunday School in Woodstock, Minn, and White Rock, South Dakota. While living in Canada, he united with the Free Methodist church, and upon moving to Hartley he continued his religious work with Rev. C. E. Wood of Spencer. Mr. Mayer was taken ill February 13th, and was taken to the Methodist Hospital at Sioux City for medical care. However, his condition was not considered serious until early Monday morn[1]ing when he suffered a heart at[1]tack. In spite of all that medical care and loving hands could do he passed away on Monday at 5 p.m. He attained the age of 73 years, 6 months, and 9 days. He leaves to mourn, his devoted wife and six children, ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Velaria Nunns of Wahpeton, N. D., and Mrs. Louise Beam of Chicago, one brother, Alfred Mayer of Spirit Lake, and a host of relatives and friends. His parents and two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Hauck of Ocheyedan, and Mrs. Julia Hauck of Santa Anna, Calif., preceded him in death. Funeral services were held last Thursday from the Methodist church. Rev. Scheider of the local church, Rev. C. E. Wood, Rev. L. Fogelman of Spencer, and Rev. Calkins of Ruthven officiated. Burial was made in the Harrison Township cemetery, May City, Iowa. The following relatives and friends from out of town attend[1]ed: Mrs. Orville Compton, Sr. and son, Orville, Jr., of South Haven, Mich., Mr. Harold Nunns, Wahpeton, North Dak., Corp. and Mrs. Fred Mayer, Cheyenne, Wyo., Mr. and Mrs. Matt Kalestad of Albert City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Mayer and Dorthy, Spirit Lake, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Meigel of Sibley, Mr and Mrs. C. Stieglitz, Melvin, la., Mrs. Martin Klever, Mrs. J. J. Smith and Mrs. Herman Huck of Melvin, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Loers and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weigand of Spirit Lake, la., Mr. Bud Sauers and Mrs. Lew Lyman of Sanborn, la., Rev. and Mrs. C. E. Wood and daughter of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Panska and Mr. and Mrs. L. Fogelman of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. C. Dykstra and daughter of Sheldon, Rev. and Mrs. Calkins of Ruthven, la., Mr. M. O Vermier, Sibley. One son, Roy Mayer of Hawarden, Sask., Canada, was unable to attend. He didn't climb the hills of fame, but kept the middle ground; On history's pages ne'er his name by any will be found. But he was brave and he was good, and always did his best; Greatness is not by numbers told, Nor always written down. On history's pages all that's gold goes not into a crown. But men are great, who day by day are cheerful, kind and true, And give their best along life's way of service to the few.
