Description	:	Charles Sloan Batdorf was born on November 29, 1897, to David Wertz Batdorf (1873-1948) and Della E. (Sloan) Batdorf (1871-1935) near Richland, Kansas. He spent his youth helping his parents on their Miami County farm and, from 1916 to 1918, Charles attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. He was a member of the Aztex fraternity, living in the frat house at 1224 Fremont in Manhattan during his freshman and sophomore years. Read More	Charles Sloan Batdorf was born on November 29, 1897, to David Wertz Batdorf (1873-1948) and Della E. (Sloan) Batdorf (1871-1935) near Richland, Kansas. He spent his youth helping his parents on their Miami County farm and, from 1916 to 1918, Charles attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. He was a member of the Aztex fraternity, living in the frat house at 1224 Fremont in Manhattan during his freshman and sophomore years. In 1919, Aztex became the Gamma Chi chapter of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. While Charles was away at college, his parents adopted 10-year-old Doris Matthews who had come to Kansas from Brooklyn, New York, on the Orphan Train. From July 18, 1918, to September 30, 1921, Charles served in the U.S. Navy during and after World War I. After being discharged from the service, he returned to the family farm near Richland, Kansas, later moving with his parents to Spearville in Ford County, Kansas, where he became a druggist. In 1926, when his parents moved to Wellsville in Franklin County, Kansas, Charles again moved with them, helping his father on the farm while becoming the proprietor of a Wellsville drug store. Charles married Gertrude Virginia Casto, daughter of the late Wellsville physician, Dr. Jasper Casto, MD, around this time. In 1935, when Charles was 38 years old, his mother Della died and, in 1948, his father David passed away. Beginning in 1951, records show that Charles and Gertrude Batdorf lived at 1051 Egan Avenue, Pacific Grove, California. This would be their home for the rest of their lives. Charles was a salesman for Holman’s Department Store, 542 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove, CA, until he retired sometime after 1965. Charles Batdorf died on March 9, 1976.
