McFarling was born January 21, 1903, in Macon, Missouri, to Cyrus and Cora (Dunlavy) McFarling. He grew up on a homestead near Lacey, SD and attended country schools in the area and high school in Fort Pierre. Charles married Mildred Leach on Fegruary 10, 1930, in Philip, South Dakota. Read More	The following biography was included in Charles McFarling's Funeral Memorial Pamphlet: "Charles S. McFarling was born January 21, 1903, in Macon, Missouri, to Cyrus and Cora (Dunlavy) McFarling. He grew up on a homestead near Lacey, SD and attended country schools in the area and high school in Fort Pierre. Charles married Mildred Leach on Fegruary 10, 1930, in Philip, South Dakota. As a young man, Charles worked on a farm. After marriage they moved to Buffalo. While in Buffalo, Charles carried mail, worked in a coal mine, helped build a telephone line, a dam, a school building, and built a sawmill to cut boards for building their home. They lived in Buffalo until 1944 when they moved to Fort Pierre. After moving to Fort Pierre, Charles built a Tabernacle at Byron Bible Camp and did a variety of construction jobs including Big Chief buildings, and working on the Oahe Dam. In the late 1950's he owned and operated the Midway Motel, using his carpentry skills to build new units. After that he went on to manage a lumber yard until his retirement. Charles was a long time member of the Fort Pierre Congregational Church. His many interests included studying the bible and eading, bee keeping, building beeboxes, rock hounding, cutting and polishing rocks, and puttering around in his shop on many projects. In his 90s he taught himself the art of caning furniture. Charles is survived by his wife Mildred of Fort Pierre, two sons, James and his wife Lois of Pierre and Charles Jr. and his wife Linda of Fort Pierre, four daughters, Betty Boyle and her husband Art of Pierre, Margaret Mikkelsen and her husband Mike of Agar, Donna Hulbert and her husband Roger of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Patricia Wernli and her husband Marc of Denver, Colorado, two sisters, Marguerite Madison of Spearfish and Fern Beauton and her husband Bill of Bethany, Connecticut; one son-in-law Marvin Swan of Fort Pierre,; 23 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren and one great greatgrandchild. he was preceded in death by hisparents, one daughter Shirley Swan, one brother Don and one sister Irma Leach."
