Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, at the Fort Pierre Congregational Church. Burial was at Scotty Philip Cemetery. Mildred Margaret McFarling was born Mildred Margaret Leach on September 1, 1907 at Conde, South Dakota to Albert and Amelia (Ried) Leach. She lived in Conde her first 8 years, completing her first two years of school there before the family moved to a farm west of Fort Pierre, South Dakota, where she attended several contry schools, prior to high school in Fort Pierre. Mildred married Charles McFarling on February 10, 1930, in Philip, South Dakota. They lived near Buffalo, South Dakota, several years and then moved into Buffalo in 1936. They lived there until 1944 when they moved to Fort Pierre, South Dakota, which was to be their home the rest of their lives. Mildred was a full time homemaker until the late 1950's when she and Charlie bought the Midway Motel. They operated it for 8 years and after that Mildred worked at the Waldene Motel until retirement. While attending high school Mildred joined the Fort Pierre Congregational Church where she attended until entering the Beverly Nursing home the fall of 1999. Her many interests and hobbies included ceramics, rock-hounding, sewing, embroidery, crocheting, painting, and gardening. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she was involved in P.T.A., and was treasurer of the Girl Scouts. Mildred is survived by 6 children and their spouses: Betty and Arthur Boyle of Pierre, South Dakota; James and Lois McFarling of Pierre, South Dakota; Margaret and Mike Mikkelsen of rural Agar, South Dakota; Donna Thaden of Creston, Iowa; Charles Gorden and Linda McFarling of Fort Pierre, South Dakota; Patricia and Marc Wernli of Denver, Colorado; son-in-law Marvin Swan of rural Fort Pierre, south Dakota; one sister-in-law, Fern Beauton of Bethany, Connecticut; 23 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her daughter Shirley Swan; her parents; her sister, Lucille Schofield and her 3 brothers, lloyd, Wallace and Homer Leach."
