While machinery was dashing like bees about the farm, in the fields and on the road, the ladies were preparing a meal appropriate to the working occasion. ?? of chicken and six or seven ?? of pie were conspicuous on the front porch where the men were served cafeteria style. They ate at two picnic tables in the yard. But after the work and before the meal, the Rev. C.W. Thompson gave a prayer of thanks that we live in a land where the opportunity for such neighborliness presents itself, and where that opportunity is gladly shouldered. Mr. Thompson, the McDowell brothers, Bill Dunn, Dan Robinson, the Scanlon brothers, Albert Carrothers, Art Goos, Milton Robinson, Harold Wilson, Jack Robinson, Harry McDowell, Roy McDowell, A.E. (Fritz) Lechtenberg, the McRoberts brothers, R.J. Emerson, the Wenger brothers, and many of their wives. Unknown paper - probably Manchester Press Rites Today For Silver Creek Man Charles Swindle, 68, lifetime resident of rural Ryan, was dead on arrival at Delaware County Memorial hospital in Manchester Friday, Jan. 18. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. today (Monday) at the Silver Creek United Methodist church with the Rev. Sheridan Mallott officiating. Interment was at Silver Creek cemetery. Mr. Swindle was born Sept. 5, 1911 at Beldon, Neb., the son of Frank and Florence (Lindermann) Swindle. He received his education in the Silver Creek grade school and Manchester high school. May 16, 1942 he was married to Iva Wade at the Silver Creek Methodist church. He was employed by the Coggon Creamery for six years and was a maintenance and machine operator for Delaware County for 12 years. He also farmed in Adams township until 1975. He was a member of the United Methodist church at Silver Creek. Mr. Swindle is survived by his wife of Ryan; two daughters, Mrs. Neil (Janet) Vauthrin of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Carl (Lynda) Schnebbs of Marengo; one son, Wade Swindle of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Louise Preston of Manchester, and one brother, Paul Swindle of LaMesa, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy. Bohnenkamp-Vernon funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
