That afternoon Mrs. Searcy had gone over to visit Mrs. Harry Hillyer and Tom had said he would go down town. Returnng home about three o'clock Mrs. Searcy saw her husbands hat but he was gone. She looked for him in the house but could not find him so went out to the barn. There she found him dead. Neighbors were called and the doctor sent for. He had been dead for some time as his body was cold. Evidently he had sat down on hay in the barn and when he killed himself the body had fallen over on his left side and the gun had fallen from his hand and laid on his left arm. The county coroner was notified and the body left there until he arrived that evening. As there was no doubt but that the wound was self-inflicted the coroner decided no inquest was necessary. Mr. Searcy has been in poor health for several years and has not been able to work steadily. Part of the time he has been bedfast and in a serious condition. He was generally employed by the railroad as a section hand and worked Monday morning but laid off in the afternoon because of the high wind. Thomas Searcy was born in 1853 and came to Kansas about forty years ago. He was the youngest of the family. Besides his widow who is his second wife he is survived by one son, Ed of St. Joe and two older brothers, John and Bart who are in Colorado. A grandniece, Mrs. Mable Vanderpool of Munden, was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Searcy. Funeral services were held at the Advent Church Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. F. E. Warman and the remains laid to rest in the Muscotah Cemetery. Muscotah Record, Thursday, 1 April 1920, Page 1 Charlie Thompson Searcy was born Sept. 25, 1857 at Gary, Doniphan county, Kansas and died at Muscotah March 23, 1920, age 62 years, 5 months and 28 days. The early part of his life was spent in Missouri, moving to Atchison county at the age of 17 years. He was married to Ida Brown in January 1880. To this union was born one son, Clarence Edward. She died in 1882. He was married again October 2, 1889 to Elizapeth Alison. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, son and adopted daughter, Mrs. Mable Vanderpool, who lived with them from the age of 2 1/2 years, also 7 grandchildren. Mr. Searcy has lived most of his life in the Muscotah community and was well liked by all who knew him. He was a member of the Advent Christian Church. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the church by Rev. F. E. Warman assisted by Rev. Robt. D. Bussey. Other relatives here to attend the funeral were his nephew, Dee Searcy and his niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Russow, of St. Joe.
