I checked his official death record at the Wapello County Court House, and it also gave his date of birth as March 2, 1860. I checked his official death record at the Wapello County Court House, and it also gave his date of birth as March 2, 1860. Charles, age 5, was in the 1870 Census, living with his parents in Eagle, Brown County, Ohio, and he was also with them in the 1880 Census for Eagle, Brown County, Ohio, at the age of 15. In all of the other census records, his birth year was shown as about 1864 or about 1865. For the purposes of this memorial, I am using the birth year of 1864, as shown in his gravestone. I have transcribed the obituary as written. --------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," August 26, 1954: Charles V. Overstake, 94, of 1829 West Finley avenue, died at the Ottumwa hospital at 9 p.m. Wednesday. The son of Samuel and Nancy Jane Overstake, he was born March 2, 1860, in Youngstown, Ohio. He had lived in the surrounding community for the pat 65 years, the last four and one-half years of which were spent in Ottumwa. He was a retired miner and farmer. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Richards of Chariton and Mrs. Elizabeth Harness and Mrs. Opal Hildebrand, both of Ottumwa; one brother, Roy Overstake of Pennsylvania, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rhoda, February 26, 1950; and two sons, Bert and Willie Overstake. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel in charge of the Rev. Albert Peterson. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
