He was born Nov. 15, 1898, at North Liberty, Ind., the son of David Berton and Lucinda (Baughman) Steele. Read More	CHARLES VERNON STEELE - Friday - June 6, 1997 Charles Vernon Steele, 98, and a 72-year resident of Manson, died Thursday, June 5, 1997, at Lake Chelan Community Hospital. He was born Nov. 15, 1898, at North Liberty, Ind., the son of David Berton and Lucinda (Baughman) Steele. In March of 1911, he moved with his family to Washington, settling in the Sunnyslope area near Wenatchee, where he attended school. When his father became ill, he left school to work to support his family. He later returned to school, graduating with the class of 1919 from Wenatchee High School. Throughout his school years he continued to help support the family while delivering newspapers on horseback for the old Wenatchee Record. On June 20, 1920, he was married to Mildred Ricks in Okanogan. They moved to Manson where Verne and his father planted an orchard. He continued to raise apples until he sold his orchard in 1970. He continued to live in the family home until his death. He was a longtime member of the Manson United Methodist Church where he served on the governing board, was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts, receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1948. He was a charter member of the Manson Kiwanis, serving as president and secretary. He also served as song leader for 45 years. He was affectionately known as Granpa Vern and enjoyed high school sports while his children were in school. He is survived by one son, Lester, Manson; one daughter, Mrs. Noble (Ardith) Law, Tonasket; one sister, Ann Steele, Wenatchee; one brother, Elmon, Kennewick; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1994, three brothers and one grandson. Services are under the direction of Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
