Keniston, for fifty years a resident of this city and one of Hawarden's most widely known business men, died at his home at 7 o'clock Monday morning following an immediate illness of about a week's duration. Keniston, for fifty years a resident of this city and one of Hawarden's most widely known business men, died at his home at 7 o'clock Monday morning following an immediate illness of about a week's duration. Not many people were aware that he was seriously ill and news of his death came as a distinct shock to the community. His death resulted from an infection of the blood stream which manifested itself early last week with an apparent blood clot in the knee joint. Physicians in attendance regarded his condition as dangerous and a trained nurse was installed to care for him. The infection caused him intense pain and finally moved to the muscles of his heart resulting in his death. Funeral services will be held at the Associated church at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon with the pastor, Rev. T.H. Harding, in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery. Charles W. Keniston, eldest son of Uriah B. and Hester H. Keniston, was born at St. Charles, DeKalb county, Ill., Oct. 2, 1862, so lacked but two months of being 74 years of age at the time of his death. He came with his parents to Plymouth county in 1867 when they located on a homestead three miles north of LeMars were he grew to young manhood. He was united in marriage with Hettie M. Elder near LeMars on Nov. 30, 1882. After their marriage they made their home on a farm near Seney until 1886 when they moved to Hawarden. Mr. Keniston was employed as a threshing machine engineer at that time and sold threshing outfits through the country out of season. In 1890 he entered the employ of the Plano company, manufacturers of threshing machines and all types of farm machinery. He worked as a salesman, auditor and collector for this firm for a period of twelve years. In 1902 he severed his connection with the Plano people and engaged in the farm implement business in Hawarden in partnership with the late W. Balcom, succeeding to full control of the business a few years later. He continued in the implement business and pioneered the automobile business in Hawarden until 1912 when he sold out to Steele & Metcalf. About 1915 he engaged in the exclusive tire business which he continued to operate for a number of years, finally disposing of the business to Fogel & Fleshman. Since then he has devoted his time and energy exclusively to building up and handling an extensive collection business and looking after his property interests. His diligence and success as a collector brought him a large clientele. In addition to an active business career here for fifty years he found opportunity for public service. He served as mayor of Hawarden from 1914 to 1916 and for the past fifteen years has served as justice of the peace for Buncombe township. Four sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Keniston but only one, Harry E. of Hawarden, with his mother, survives to mourn his loss. The two oldest sons, Alvin and Freddie, died within a week of each other when under 5 years of age during a diphtheria epidemic in 1887. Their youngest son, Arthur, grew to manhood and was employed in New York City where he died Feb. 19, 1924, leaving a widow. The only grandchild they ever had was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Keniston, who passed away when only about 3 years of age. Mr. Keniston's father, Uriah B. Kenaston, lived until April 18, 1935, when he passed away at the advanced age of nearly 96 years. In addition to his wife and son he is survived by five sisters and one brother. They are: Mrs. Hattie Ferguson of Anderson, Mo., who has been here the past several weeks on a visit; Wilbur S. Kenaston of Aitkin, Minn.; Mrs. Hugo Kenago of LeMars; Mrs. D.E. Port of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Ethel Roach of Sioux Dity, and Mrs. Chas. A. Allen of Akron. Charley Keniston was a man of positive personality. He was direct, blunt and outspoken and no one was ever left in doubt as to where he stood on any issue. He was a resourceful and successful business man of unquestioned personal integrity. He occupied a unique place in the business life of this community and performed a service to his business associates that will be difficult to duplicate. Yet beneath a gruff exterior which stirred up frequent animosities there was a heart of sympathy and kindliness oft demonstrated to those who counted on his friendship. As a husband and father, neighbor and friend he was devoted, helpful, generous and indulgent and enjoyed the confidence and respect of a wide circle of loyal friends in the community who extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family in their loss.
