Funeral services for Charles W. Van Orden, pioneer resident of Lyon county who died Tuesday morning in St. Francis hospital in Wichita will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Roberts-Blue Funeral home. Rev. Claude G. Large, pastor of the First Christian church, will conduct the services, and burial will be in Chicago Mound cemetery. Mr. Van Orden's death followed a sickness of only two days. He had been visiting a son, Fred Van Orden, and other relatives in Wichita since the middle of last week. He came to Kansas in the early eighties and lived here continuously until the death of his wife six years ago. Since that time, he had divided his time between Kansas and California. He was an enthusiastic traveler, his last long trip about a year ago taking him through Yellowstone park and up into Canada, returning by way of Victoria, B.C. into the Pacific coast states. Charles Wells Van Orden, son of James L. and Elizabeth St. Clair Van Orden, was born in New York City, September 6, 1856. Of the 12 children of his parents, he was the last survivor. His ancestors came to America with the Dutch colony which founded New Amsterdam. His mother died when he was a small child, and he lived in the home of two of his mother's sisters several years. When he was 12 years old he started for San Francisco, where lived an uncle. Wishing to see something of the Middle West, he bought a ticket to Omaha, and in the hotel where he stayed the first night, he was robbed, leaving him only 62 cents. Other guests at the hotel, hearing of his plight, were ready to help him on his way. The owner of the Box V ranch, situated on the south fork of the Platte river, offered him a job, and he took it. this was the year of the Mountain Meadow massacre and he Cheyenne Indians made much trouble. a bunch of Indians ran into some cattlemen, near the Kansas line, and of the 19 white men, 12 were killed. Mr. Van Orden carried the mark of a spent bullet in his forehead and had a spear wounds on his body. He was taken for care and treatment to Fort Kearney by members of the Ninth Kansas cavalry, who were rounding up Cheyennes. He lived four years on the Box V ranch. Next he lived several years on another ranch, near Salem, Neb., where he was made foreman before he was 18. Before he was 19 he was asked to serve as city marshal of Salem and moved into town and accepted the appointment. He knew Col. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, "Wild Bill" Hickox and other colorful frontier characters of that day. He was a member of the Nebraska Rangers before he was 17, and he saw active service with them. He made two trips driving cattle over the Chisholm trails. Mr. Van Orden went to Joplin, Mo., about 1876. Later he returned to Nebraska and lived at Falls City until he came to Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Van Orden lived in the Chicago Mound neighborhood for many years before moving to Emporia. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J.E. Saunders, of Dodge City; four sons, Fred Van Orden, Wichita; Thomas F. Van Orden, Fresno, Calif., and Ivan and Robert Van Orden, Emporia; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His wife died January 15, 1936, and a son, Chester Van Orden, a soldier in World War I who was gassed overseas, died in 1935. Mr. Van Orden for many years was in the employ of Stearn Brothers and company, a Kansas City financial institution. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ He married Mary Elizabeth Brown on Mar 26, 1887 in Jackson Co, MO. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Charlie and Mary Elizabeth Van Orden's first child was daughter Ada Beryl Van Orden, b. Jan 1, 1888 in Lyon Co, KS; died (per CA Death Recs) as Ada Beryl Saunders on Sep 14, 1979 in Fallbrook, San Diego Co, CA. Her husband was James E Saunders, whom she married in Lyon Co KS on Aug 22, 1910.
