Charles Wesley Bernard Jr. was born on September 5, 1964 to Charles Sr. and Eleanore (Person) Bernard. On September 16, 2007 Charles was united in marriage with Ann Renken at Swan Lake Christian Camp outside of Viborg, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls; and Charles was anxiously awaiting the birth of their child this December. Over the years Charles has had many jobs including working at a pizza parlor, Movie Theater, a satellite television station, numerous photography studios, driving truck and for the last twelve years working at EROS as an Image Processing Specialist. Charles is a member of Faith Temple Church in Sioux Falls. Charles enjoyed working on the computer, science fiction, photography, the history of airplanes and guns. Above all he loved his family, spending time with them and helping them anyway he could. He was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Ann Bernard of Sioux Falls, SD; mother, Eleanore Bernard of Sioux Falls, SD; one sister, Deborah Garza and her husband Ruben of Beresford, SD; parents in law, Jim and Bev Renken of Alcester, SD; four brother-in- laws, Tim Renken and his wife Kim of Alcester, SD, Matt Renken and his wife, Lindsey of Maple Grove, MN, Jake Renken and, Jerry Renken of Spink, SD; ten nieces and nephews, Nicholas, Nathan, Rhianna, J.J., Hannah, Heidi, Harbor, Hazel, Rachael and Mariah. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Bernard Sr. and two brothers, John and James Bernard. On Sunday, August 8th, Charles Bernard had passed away at home unexpectedly. He had been employed at the EROS data Center since 1998. Charles was instrumental in the development and production implementation of the Zeiss automated photoscan capability for the Long Term Archive. Chuck (as we knew him) was able to teach himself how to use this complicated set of the Zeiss application software routines to capture imagery from the NASA Shuttle Large Format Camera (LFC) film and stitch the independent scans back together to create a digital copy of the 9 inch by 18 inch LFC frames. Before his death, Chuck completed the processing of 1,821 LFC images through these routines to create over 325 GB's of no cost data for EarthExplorer users to download. Chuck was also the LTA scan lead for the completion of the British Antarctica Survey test roll. This roll involved original 170 frames of 1957 aerial photography acquired by Great Britain over the Falkland Islands and Antarctica. This successful test paves the way for the transfer of another 119 original film rolls of the same era and area to USGS/EROS. This effort coordinated through USGS/Reston and the University of Minnesota will facilitate the use of this historical imagery around the world. Chuck's daily efforts have helped to open up the USGS Long Term Archive around the country and around the world. His dedication and eagerness to apply new tools in the data capture of historical analog imagery will surely be missed. He leaves behind his wife, Ann, and their expectant child due to arrive in December. Charles enjoyed life, politics, and the excitement of their new arrival. He was always willing to discuss his new responsibilities on becoming a father.
