Woodward filed for his pension and when he applied for admission to Veterans’ Homes he was required to use the name under which he served (Woodford) to gain access to the benefits he (Woodward) earned in the service of the United States. Charles W. died and is buried at the Veterans Home of California. His headstone is marked with the same name, Woodford, not Woodward, under which he was admitted to the Veterans Home of California. Documents found in the Pension Application File for Charles W. Woodford show the same family members and enumeration and voter registration address as for Charles W. Woodward. Charles W. Woodford was enlisted by First Lieutenant Willam McKay Owen, Company G, Sixth Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers, as a private at San Francisco, California September 17 and was mustered into Company B, Sixth Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers, by First Lieutenant William Wright Tompkins, Third United States Artillery, September 20, 1864. At his enlistment Charles stated that he was born in Noble County, Indiana, and that he was twenty-four years old and by occupation a Cook. His enlistment contract described him as being five feet seven inches high with Fair complexion, Hazel eyes and Brown hair. Assistant Surgeon Benjamin Tappan, Jr., examined Charles and found, in his opinion, that Charles was free from all body defects and mental infirmity, which would in any way disqualify him from performing the duties of a soldier. Private Woodford joined his company from the General Recruiting Depot located on Harrison Street, San Francisco, September 22, 1864. Twenty-five dollars of Bounty had been paid and seventy-five dollars was due. Private Woodford mustered out at Benicia Barracks, Solano County, California, October 25, 1865. Charles W. Woodward married Mattie Jane Mathews at Sonoma County, California, July 20, 1868. C. W. Woodward, age 33 years, was enumerated June 30, 1870, at Santa Rosa, Sonoma, California, with Jennie Woodward 18 and Austin Woodward, born during March 1870. The enumeration shows that C. W. Woodward birthplace was Indiana and that his occupation was Clerk. Charles Wesley Woodward, age 41 years, nativity Indiana, occupation Salesman, residence Mendocino, registered to vote in Sonoma County August 4, 1879. Charles W. Woodward, age 41 years and a clerk in store, was enumerated June 5, 1880, at Healdsburg, Sonoma, with Martha J. Woodward 26, George A. Woodward 10 and Frederick O. Woodward 3. The enumeration shows that Charles birthplace was Indiana. Jennie Woodward, nee Mathews, died at Healdsburg, Sonoma County, January 8, 1885. Charles Wesley Woodward, age 49 years, nativity Indiana, occupation Confectioner, residence Santa Rosa, registered to vote in Sonoma County April 4, 1888. He filed, under the name Charles W. Woodford, for a Civil War veteran's pension April 9, 1898, and again in April 1907, and received application No. 1,206,284 and certificate No.973,690. C. W. Woodward, age 61 years, was enumerated June 1, 1900, at New Whatcom, Whatcom County, Washington, with Geo. A. Woodward 30, Fred C. Woodward 23 and Pearl M. Woodward 20, a daughter-in-law. The enumeration shows that he was born during July 1838, a widower and that his occupation as Confectioner. Charles W. Woodward, age 71 years and a widower, was enumerated at Portland Ward 8, Multnomah, Oregon. The enumeration shows that he owned his home free and clear of mortgage and that he was a survivor of the Union Army. He was admitted, under the name Charles W. Woodford, to the Veterans Home of California July 7, 1916. At admission he stated his year of birth was 1839. In October 1916 Charles was registered to vote as a Democrat at the Veteran’s Home. He was admitted, under the name Charles W. Woodford, to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Volunteer Disabled Soldiers at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California, January 6, 1919. At admission he stated that he was age 79 years and was born in Indiana. Charles W. also stated that his residence after discharge was Arbuckle, Colusa County, California, and that by occupation he was a Farmer. Additionally, Charles W. stated he was a widower and his son, Fred Woodward, at 230 Washington Street, Portland, Oregon, was his nearest relative. (Note that the World War I Draft Registration Card for Fred Charles Woodward, born March 2, 1877, shows his father as C. W. Woodard, Yountville, Cal.) Charles was discharged from the Pacific Branch Home at his own request April 4, 1919. Charles W. Woodford was enumerated at Yountville, Napa County, California, January 28, 1920. The death certificate for Charles W. Woodford, shows this date of death as January 6, 1923, his birth date as Indiana and his birth date as July 21, 1838. His birth date may be July 22, 1839, based on his age shown on the death certificate as 83 years 5 months 15 days. The death certificate shows the name of his father as Andrew Woodford and his mother’s name as Hannah Tuttle.
