Townsend, a long-time highly respected citizen of this county, died early Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O.H. Johnson in Eldora, after an illness of a few days. Mr. Townsend had suffered a stroke on Friday while helping shingle a roof, and was removed to his room by his son-in-law, Mr. Johnson, with the assistance of neighbors, where he was given every possible medical aid without avail. A short service will be held at the Johnson residence at two o'clock Friday, with a prayer by the Rev. Henry Marlenee, pastor of the Gospel Tabernacle. At 2:30 funeral services will be held at the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. F.O. Hillman. Burial will be made in Eldora cemetery. Charlie Willard Townsend was born January 30, 1867, in Hokah, Minn. His father was an engineer on the Milwaukee road, and the family was moved to several places. In 1881 the family settled on a farm in Bureau county, Ill. On April 8, 1885, he was united in marriage with Luella M. Brock of Starck county, Ill. In October 1887, they moved to Eldora and in 1888 to a farm near Berlin, where they united with the Methodist Episcopal church. Both were active in this church, Mr. Townsend serving as Sunday school superintendent, president of the Epworth League, and filling the position of organist for over twenty years. In November, 1909, they moved to Eldora, residing here until Mrs. Townsend's death in 1936, since which time he has made his home with his children. In Eldora they united with the Methodist Episcopal church . Mr. Townsend was a member of the I.O.O.F. fraternity, serving in all places of trust. He also belonged to the Encampment and served as district deputy grand patriarch/ Surviving are four children: Carl (Ella) Townsend of Minneapolis, Mrs. Blanche (Orville) Johnson and Mrs. Allie (Jacob) Starr of Eldora and Mrs. Frances (George) Lamb of Des Moines.
