Moritz of Baraboo, WI, 1997, transcript courtesy of Lori Rust. With his parents & siblings Henry & Leo, Charles moved from IA to near Herrick, Gregory Co., SD. He'd return to Iowa to visit "Mary" Pille. After they wed, they built a one story house about a mile east of his parent's place near Herrick. Their only child, Cornelius Engelbert, was born June 9, 1916 and died July 21, 1916. Mary contracted tuberculosis. March 1917, Charles and Mary moved near Oakdale, IA, where she died of TB. Devastated, Charles joined the Army, but was found to have TB and sent to AZ to recuperate, after which he received a short furlough. On his way to SD, he visited Mary Rust Baustert (his paternal aunt) in Okarche, OK, where he met Agatha Veik. They corresponded when he returned to the Army. He contracted the flu and was not expected to live, but recovered, was discharged and returned home. Charles & Agatha married and built a house a half mile east of his parents, later called the Brown House (painted dark brown with white trim) where, except for 1 year in Herrick, they would live till 1937. 1928-1929, Charles managed the Horst Garage & Whipet auto dealership in Herrick, then returned to farming, continuing till 1944. Son Paul leased, then purchased the farm. Charles & Agatha moved to Herrick where he was owner-operator of Rust Grain Elevator (formerly Krotter Elevator), which was adjacent to Herrick's original grain elevator, built 1906 by his uncles, Louis Simons & J. Fred Caspary. Charles also owned & managed the Herrick Beer Parlor (future pool hall), which he sold to Lou Welbes.
