In 1870 Charles, age 7, was living in Washington Township, Adair County, Iowa with his step-father Joseph Kimes, age 52, his mother Emaline, age 39, his brother John A. Herrington (age 9) and step-siblings Nancy Kimes (age 16), Larina E. Kimes (age 12), Erastus H. Kimes (age 20) and Joseph Kimes (age 18). Joseph's occupation was Farmer. On June 5, 1889, Charles (age 24) married Ida May Comstock (age 17) in Menlo, Guthrie County, Iowa. Ida's parents are George L. Comstock and Isabelle M. Green. Ida was born circa 1872 in Missouri. In 1895 Charles and May lived in Polk County, Iowa with three children: Pearl (born November 30, 1890), Blanch (born circa 1892) and Earl William (born circa 1894). The 1900 census shows Charles (age 34) and May (age 29) living in Des Moines Township, Precinct 3, Des Moines City Ward 1, Polk County, Iowa. The couple had been married 12 years. Also in household was children Pearl (age 10), Blanche (age 8), Earl (age 6) and Phillip (age 3, born January 15, 1897). Charles' occupation was Day Laborer. On July 4, 1909, Charles and Ida had a son Kenneth Harrington, born in Des Moines, Iowa. Date of death March 11, 1934. It is unknown why he is not part of the household in the 1910 census. The 1910 census shows Charles (age 49) and May I. (age 36) living in Des Moines Ward 5, Polk, County, Iowa with children Blanch W. (age 17, divorced), Earl W. (age 16), Lyle P. (Phillip, age 14), Helen (age 5) and Everet L. (age 3, born November 18, 1906 in Iowa City). Charles' occupation was Laborer General Work. Charles died February 12, 1912 at 6:00 p.m. at the University Hospital in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa. Cause of death Tuberculosis peritonitis. Name on death certificate spelled Herrington. Certificate signed by step-sister Eva (Kimes) McCune. On February 16, 1912 Ida gave birth to twin boys: Harry and Harold. The father died a few days ago in a local hospital. Mr. Harrington passed away recently, in a local hospital, after a battle of many months with tubercular troubles in his abdominal regions. The father had scarcely been laid to rest, when the mother, at her rural home, was stricken down, and the children were born to her. Mother and twins are doing as well as could be expected. On April 3, 1919 Ida May married her second husband Archie Coil in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. They divorced on May 25, 1921. She took back the name Herrington. The 1920 census for Archie and Ida May shows Pearl married with last name of Bowman but husband not listed as part of household. On June 2, 1920 Blanche W. married George M. Anderson in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. The 1940 census for Ida May (age 68) shows her as head of household living in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan with son Harry (age 28) and granddaughter Gladys Vance (age 17). Ida died April 19, 1948. Some records show, including death certificate, Charles' birth year as 1866. It is this contributor's belief that is not correct. Charles' father Bradley was remarried in 1865. The death certificate shows place of burial as Pleasant Valley Cemetery, more commonly known as Sandtown.
