Description	:	Charles Wilson Wood was born in New York State Jul 27, 1833. When he was a small boy he moved to Indiana and when a young man to Huntley, IL. He was married to Florence Lodica Berry in 1872, who was born Apr 27, 1854, the daughter of John & Lovesta Jane Bennett Berry. Four years later in 1876 they moved west in a covered wagon to Rising City, Nebraska. In 1884 the came to Stratton, Nebraska and homesteaded five miles south of Stratton. When he was a small boy he moved to Indiana and when a young man to Huntley, IL. He was married to Florence Lodica Berry in 1872, who was born Apr 27, 1854, the daughter of John & Lovesta Jane Bennett Berry. Four years later in 1876 they moved west in a covered wagon to Rising City, Nebraska. In 1884 the came to Stratton, Nebraska and homesteaded five miles south of Stratton. He was one of the first to take a homestead in that section. He still owned the land at the time of his death, being the only homesteader in Union TWP to hold the original entry. He had 1480 acres in Union Precinct. During the first year on the homestead his wife, Florence, passed away after a three month illness. Her illness had continued for several weeks before any woman settler had arrived in the neighborhood. Seven children were born to this union. They were Vessie Hutches, Amos Wood, Alice Prickett, FLora Thoms, Ora Clark, Clara Barnett and Mary Brown. Mr. Wood remained on the homestead for 25 years and raised his family there giving them such advantages as pioneer life could afford. His home served as the first church for many years. Here Sunday School was held every Sunday. He assisted in building the first school house in the neighborhood. He was the first director and held that position for many years. In 1909 he moved into Stratton and was married to Flora Fitch Bolton, the identical twin sister of his first wife. They raised her two grandsons, John and Albert Fitch. He bought and sold and raised many a fine thoroughbred Percheron horses. Information from Marlene Pajor: Charles was raised by David and Diadama (Howard) Wood,although they were not is biological parents.
