FALES PASSES AWAY FRIDAY Resident of Miller Since 1894, Mrs. Fales Dies At Age of 88 Mrs. Charlotte Fales Friends of Mrs. Charlotte Fales were deeply grieved to learn that, following an illness of several weeks, she had passed away Friday. A resident of Miller since 1894, Mrs. Fales was one of the best known and beloved ladies of the city, numbering her friends by her acquaintances. Although nearly a century old, she had learned the secret of eternal youth through her cheerful outlook on life. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon, the Rev. T. J. Simons officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the G.A.R. cemetery. Obituary Charlotte A. Avery was born at Northwood, New Hampshire, on the 22nd day of January, 1834, and died at Miller, South Dakota, on the 8th day of December, 1922, at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 16 days. Her fathers family consisted of a wife and 13 children, 9 boys and 4 girls. She was married to George W. Calef on the first day of January, 1853 at Rochester, New Hampshire, and to this union one child, a daughter was born, who is known as Mrs. John W. Coquillette of Miller. Her husband enlisted as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War, and died in August, 1865. Eight of her brothers were also soldiers in the Union Army, two of whom were killed in battle. With her daughter she removed to Boston shortly after the close of the war, and in 1869 was married to Emerson F. Fales who was also a veteran of the Civil War and continued to live in Boston. In 1879 she removed with her family to Audubon, Iowa, and when her daughter came to Miller, in 1884 she accompanied her and lived with her two years, returning to Audubon in 1886. On the death of her husband in 1894 she returned to Miller to live with her daughter and has since that time made her home here. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in youth, but since coming to Miller has affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, and has been a consistent member. She is the last of a once large family to pass away and is survived only by her daughter, Mrs. Coquillette, grand daughter, Mrs. Joseph L. Hofer Jr., of Bridgewater, S.D., and her great grand son, Wayne Nelson, of Onida, S.D., all of whom were present at the funeral.
