Description	:	Charlotte Damaris was born at Elizabethtown, Illinois to Joseph Demaris and Esther Pierce on January 3, 1830. Early in life she united with the Christian Church and kept the faith all through life. She was married to Albert Gilmore, March 1, 1848. In 1852 they moved to Clinton County, Iowa and located fourteen miles west of the Mississippi river, where the present town of Charoltte is now located. At that time the mail was delivered by mail carriers on horseback on the route running from Davenport to Sabula.A little later Mr. Gilmore petitioned for a post office and recommended the name... Read More	Charlotte Damaris was born at Elizabethtown, Illinois to Joseph Demaris and Esther Pierce on January 3, 1830. Early in life she united with the Christian Church and kept the faith all through life. She was married to Albert Gilmore, March 1, 1848. In 1852 they moved to Clinton County, Iowa and located fourteen miles west of the Mississippi river, where the present town of Charoltte is now located. At that time the mail was delivered by mail carriers on horseback on the route running from Davenport to Sabula.A little later Mr. Gilmore petitioned for a post office and recommended the name of Charlotte, in honor of Mrs. Gilmore, which was accepted and he was appointed the first postmaster. Mr. Gilmore built one of the first flour mills in Clinton County, at Charlotte, in 1853 and operated it until his death in 1877. In 1891 she moved with her son Charles, to Clay County Iowa, and has lived with him ever since. Her father served in the war of 1812. One brother served in the Civil war and died while in service. She is survived by two daughters and three sons. Jane A. now Mrs. Lewis Shull of Wall, South Dakota. Esther A. now Mrs. L.G. Winey, Milford, Iowa. William of Edmond, Oklahona. Charles of Sioux Rapids, and George of Milford, Iowa.
