Read More	Charlotte Clabaugh, a woman who has contributed so much to the city of Nelson and Nuckolls County, passed away December 21, 2002 at Good Samaritan Center, Nelson. Charlotte Clabaugh, the daughter of Fred and Winifred (Jackson) Kelly, was born July 19, 1926 at Superior, Nebraska. She was 76 years, 5 months, 2 days old at the time of her death. Charlotte lived on the family farm near Nora and attended elementary school in Nora before moving with her family to Nelson in 1935. She graduated from Nelson High School in 1944 and from the University of Nebraska in 1948 with a double major in sociology and psychology. On September 5 , 1948, she married Lee Clabaugh and they had three children: Steven, Janet and David. They have made Nelson their home for the past 54 years. In 1968, Lee and Charlotte purchased the Commercial Bank in Nelson. Charlotte was elected vice-president and served on the Board of Directors until taking a leave of absence in 1975. At that time, she became director of the Nuckolls County Department of Social Services and served in that capacity until her resignation in 1984. Charlotte was very active in volunteer work and local history was a favorite interest of hers. She did research on the history of Nuckolls County and the city of Nelson in particular. She was one of several people who were instrumental in the beginnings of the Nuckolls County Historical Society and she spent many hours working for the Nuckolls County Museum in Superior, Nebraska. She wrote a local history column called, "Dugouts," for the Nelson Gazette. Charlotte also spent many hours as a volunteer in the field of social services. She worked at the Hastings Regional Center in the Vocational Rehabilitation Unit and volunteered at the Educational Service Unit with the School for Retarded Children in Hastings. From 1970 - 1978 she was a board member of the Educational Services Development Program. She recruited several retired teachers in the area to help adults in Nuckolls County achieve their high school equivalency diplomas. Charlotte served on the board of the Good Samaritan Center in Nelson and the Nuckolls County Advisory Group of SASA. She spent many hours as a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center. She was active in the Methodist Church and the Nelson Community United Church of Christ. She was a past president and 58 year member of Chapter J, P.E.O. and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She served on the Brodstone Memorial Hospital Foundation Board. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; beloved mother-in-law, Ethel Clabaugh, Sisters Gwen and her husband Robert Walker; and Sister Donna and her husband Gardner Taylor. Survivors include her husband Lee of Nelson, brother, Fred Kelly and wife Mary Lou of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Steve and wife Jodene of Nelson , Nebraska; daughter, Janet Podoll and husband Jack of Lenexa, Kansas; son, Dave and wife Lisa of Beatrice, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Todd Clabaugh and wife Wendy, Travis Clabaugh and Eric and Angela Podoll; two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Gage Clabaugh; and one step-grandson, Eric Bean and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Charlotte's good humor, selfless volunteer work and love of children, family and friends will always be remembered and cherished by all who knew her. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 27, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Remembrances were given by Royce Schott. Music was, "On Eagles Wings," and "I Believe." Debi Garrison was the soloist and Carlita Price was the organist. Pallbearers were Travis Clabaugh, Todd Clabaugh, Eric Podoll, Eric Bean, Tom Murray and Royce Schott. Internment was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska.
