Smith was born in Cortland county, New York, May 14, 1847; died November 6, 1912, being 65 years, 6 months and 22 days of age. When a young man he moved with his parents to the state of Michigan where afterwards was united in marriage with Harriet Miller, September 17, 1873; then, coming to Iowa, settled on a farm in Liberty township where he has resided until his death - a period of forty years. Seven daughters and one son were born in this union, of which five daughters together with a father and mother have gone on before to welcome him on the other shore to which he spoke of being ready and willing to go. He was converted and united with the United Brethren church during the winter of 1892. He leaves a wife, one son (Arthur) and two daughters, Elsie and Zellia, and an only sister to mourn his departure. Funeral services were held at the Bethel Chapel by Rev. J. W. Cronk of Lacona. He lived with his parents until 1873, when he was married in Oceana County, Michigan, to Miss Harriet Miller, daughter of Joseph M. Miller. She was born in Mahoning County, Ohio, December 12, 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Smith first settled in Michigan, and in 1874 came to Liberty Township and settled upon section 15. Since 1881 he has owned his home on section 16, where he has forty acres; he also has 100 acres on section 15. Their five children are - Mary Alice, born September 30, 1874; Annie Myrtle, born October 14, 1876; Minnie Marie, born January 15, 1878; Arthur Edwin, born August 19, 1883; Lew Celia, born November 10, 1885. All were born in Liberty, Clarke County, Iowa. Mr. Smith is road supervisor and school director. In politics he is a republican.
