Nivens, Holly Drive, received by mail this week a Silver Star which has been posthumously awarded to their only child, Cpl. Chester R. Nivens, 20, who was killed in action February 10, 1945, while fighting with the 37th Infantry Division against the Japs in the Philippines. The Adjutant General's office of the War Department mailed the medal to Mrs. Nivens when she informed the commanding general of the Ninth Service Command, she was unable to make the trip for a formal presentation. Cpl. Nivens, former member of the California State Guard, entered the service in April, 1943, training in the AAA at Camp Haan and Camp Cooke before going overseas in October, 1944, when he was transferred to the Infantry. The citation reads: Mrs. Martha L. Nivens P.O. Box 15 Tracy, California. Dear Mrs. Nivens: I have the honor to inform you that, by direction of the President, the Silver Star has been posthumously awarded to your son, Corporal Chester R. Nivens, Infantry. The citation is as follows: "During the assault against strong Japanese emplacements In the Paco River Sector of Manilla on 10 February, 1945, Corporal Nivens' squad met intense enemy fire which seriously wounded the squad leader. Observing this, Corporal Nivens immediately assumed command and skillfully led the unit out of the impact area. He then voluntarily dashed back through the intense fire to rescue the casualty, who was lying in a completely exposed position. Corporal Nivens picked him up and carrying him on his back ran 150 yards to a position of safety. Later, when enemy fire had abated, Corporal Nivens led the squad back to its former position. Suddenly a hostile machine gun opened fire. Corporal Nivens immediately rushed to the bank of the river and placed accurate rifle on the Japanese gun crew, killing three and forcing the remainder to withdraw. Later that day, during the fire fight, Corporal Nivens was fatally wounded. His courage and combat efficiency exemplified the finest traditions of the Armed Forces."
