Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 7, 2011, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 513 Sycamore Street. Reverend Donald Sondrol and Associate Cheryl Hollich will officiate the service. Online condolences for the Axel family may be left at www.wittichfuneralhome.com. Chester was born on April 18, 1918, in Muscatine, the son of Werner and Clara Henning Axel. He married Wilma P. Marolf on June 16, 1940, at the Muscatine Zion Lutheran Church. They were married for nearly 66 years until Wilma's death on May 15, 2006. During his school years in Muscatine, he carried the Muscatine Journal and actually met his wife on his paper route. He also worked at the Axel Grocery Store on the corner of Hershey Avenue and Grandview Avenue. His father kept extending credit during the depression to folks who could not pay for their groceries and eventually had to close the store. Chet then joined Hahn Brothers Produce as a truck driver/delivery man serving local markets in and around Muscatine. He worked for Harry Hahn before and after World War II until 1950, when he joined Grain Processing Corporation. He worked at Grain Processing as a Chief Maintenance Craftsman for 32 years before retiring in 1982. While at Grain Processing Corporation, he served for many years as Secretary/Treasurer and then President of the Local Distillery Workers of America. During World War II, Chet served in the United State Marine Corps 4th Division 635th Platoon. His Platoon fought and died on Iwo Jima. Of the 62 men in the 635th only three survived. Chet saw the American Flag raised over Iwo Jima before being shipped back to Hawaii after being injured in a mortar attack. He received the Purple Heart for the several injuries he received on Iwo Jima. Chet and his four brothers and four brothers-in-law all served in the U.S. Armed Forces. He was a lifelong member and leader of Zion Lutheran Church. Zion Lutheran Church was always a very important part of his life. He not only attended church but also as a young boy attended the Zion Lutheran School. He taught Sunday school and served on many committees and on the church council. Survivors include two sons, John Axel and wife, Joni, of Muscatine, and Ron Axel and wife, Joni, of Muscatine; his daughter, Donna Axel and husband, John Wach, of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Andy Axel and wife, Elizabeth, of Davenport, Brad Axel and wife, Andrea, of Seattle, Washington, Emily Axel Goddard and husband, Ryan, of Muscatine, Joe Axel of Scottsdale, Arizona, Katy Lockard and husband, Scott, of Cedar Falls, and Jenny Clark of Waterloo; two step-grandchildren, Tracy Gilleland and husband, Rick, of Dacula, Georgia, and Chris Watson and wife, Kathy, of Muscatine; 11 great-grandchildren, Maddy, Sophia, Katy, and Emily Axel; Clara, Clayton and Margaret Goddard; Chloe and Sadie Lockard; and Cayden and Luke Clark; six step-great-grandchildren, Jake, Bryson and Brady Gilleland and Zack, Caleb and Jensen Watson; two sisters, Florence Peters of Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Beverly Sywassink and husband, Duane, of Normal, Illinois; three sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Axel of Muscatine, Peggy Axel of Muscatine, and Marian Axel of Davenport; and 17 nieces and nephews. Chet was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters, Bernice Manley and Wilma Swisher, four brothers, Don, Elmer, Harvey and Glenn Axel, three brothers-in-law, Loran Peters, Elmer Manley, and Curly Swisher, his sister-in-law, Betty Axel, and three nephews, Merle Manley, Bob Caudell, and Bill Caudell.
