Tom was an adventurous young man and he and a cousin decided to travel to California and then take a ship through the Panama Canal and head to North Carolina. In route, they stopped in Harlem, Montana to visit another cousin. They liked the west. They both got jobs and stayed awhile. When it came time to continue on with their trip, friends talked Tom into staying and taking up a homestead out near where Turner is now. He thought he would keep it 2 years, then sell it and return to North Carolina but never left. I don't know what year, but Frank and Nora Phillips and their daughters Neva and Helen came from Unionville, Missouri – they were related to the Van Voast family who were already there. There were quite a few settlers now and more coming in. There were enough young people to gather and have good times. When the Phillips' and their girls were coming out from Harlem for the first time, they saw this "cowboy" riding out across the prairie – it was Tom. Neva and Helen were thrilled to see their first cowboy! Neva and Tom were married in Chinook, Montana on December 24, 1916. They lived at his homestead location and built a small home there. In 1923 their daughter Elaine was born to them in Great Falls, Montana. They lived on the farm until about 1935 when they moved to Turner permanently. In about 1955 they sold their home in Turner to move to Lafayette, Louisiana to be near their daughter Elaine, her husband and sons Tim and Randy. They traveled back to Montana for many summers. They retired in the south and were very happy for about 20 years. Neva passed away August 15, 1978. Tom lived four years longer and passed away on December 10, 1982. They relived their years in Montana and talked so much of their great memories in the Big Sky country. They are both buried in the Turner cemetery. (Provided by Ancestry.com Member: MTGinger4.)
