Chris died Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Ashley Nursing Home. Chris Maier was born January 9, 1912, twelve miles east of Ashley, ND to Johannes and Sarah (Remfert) Maier. He grew up on the family homestead and attended Jewel District Country School. He was united in marriage to Marie Sackmann on September 20, 1936 at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Ashley. They made their home on his family homestead, where they raised small grains and livestock for 20 years. In 1956, they moved into Ashley. Chris worked at Kramer Phillips 66 Bulk and later was employed by Salzer Electric until 1959, when he became part owner in Ashley Motors. He was manager in the parts department for 18 years. The business was sold in 1977 to Terry Glur and Ray Goehring and Chris continued as parts manager until his retirement. Chris enjoyed gardening, playing board and card games, reading, doing puzzles and traveling. Chris and Marie did a lot of traveling through all of the states and made two trips overseas. They visited many countries, some of those being Israel, Egypt and Germany. Chris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a past member of the school board, hospital board, Lions Club and church council. Survivors include three sister-in-laws, Inez Salzer of Ashley, Ollie Sackmann of Ashley and Hilda Sackmann of Aberdeen, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie (1-13-03), five brothers, Jakob, John Jr., Fred, Otto and Gottfried Maier and three sisters, Christina Sackmann, Johanna Wagner and Bertha Hoffman. Casketbearers will be Clayton Maier, Keith Hochhalter, Gary Hoffman, Marlow Sackmann, Toby Rothfusz and Armadell Maier. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
