Description	:	Otto Maier, 91, of Bismarck died September 17, 2007 at Baptist Care Center at Bismarck. Otto Maier, son of Johannes and Sarah (Remfert) Maier was born May 14, 1916 on the family farm east of Ashley. He attended country and Ashley Public Schools. In the 1930's, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho and Montana for two years. Otto Maier, son of Johannes and Sarah (Remfert) Maier was born May 14, 1916 on the family farm east of Ashley. He attended country and Ashley Public Schools. In the 1930's, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho and Montana for two years. He spent three years in the United States Army, serving with the 80th Station Hospital in North Africa and Marseille in Southern France. After World War II, he worked for the North Dakota State Highway Department for a few years. He was united in marriage to Anna Retzer on July 2, 1947 at Ashley. They made their home in Ashley while he was a grain farmer southwest of Ashley. His wife died in 1979. He retired from farming in October of 1985 and moved to Bismarck. He entered the Baptist Care Center in February of 2007. Otto was a Minnesota Twins fan. After retirement, he enjoyed tours throughout the United States and Europe. He attended the 40th Anniversary of D-Day in France. While living in Bismarck, he liked to square dance. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Bismarck and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. He was also a member of Frank Piper American Legion Post #53. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Maier and Bonita Maier, both of Bismarck, one brother, Christ Maier of Ashley and four sister-in-laws, Annie Maier of Wahpeton, ND and Mary Meyer, Esther Erlenbusch and Hilda Retzer, all of Ashley. His parents, wife, five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Funeral service will be Friday, September 21, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley. The Rev. Jeff Giles will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Ashley with military rites by Frank Piper American Legion Post #53. Casketbearers will be Clayton Maier, Gary G. Hoffman, Glenn Retzer, Wayne Retzer, Rick Oberlander and Warren LaVoi. Condolences may be sent to www.carlsenfh.com Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
