MN the first of two children born to Nels Nelsen (1863-1933)and Mary (Maria) Sophia Eiby (1883-1901)originally from Viborg amt. Denmark. His maternal grandparents were Niels Severine Eiby and Ane Marie Elisabeth Severin Harthimmer of Viborg amt. DK. His paternal grandparents were Casper Nielsen (1831-1883) of Viborg, Denmark and Ane Kirstine Jensdatter (1828-1907). Christ never met either set of grandparents as they lived and died in Denmark. His mother Mary Sophia Eiby died Jun. 1900 when Christ was abt. nine or ten years old in New Effington, Roberts County, South Dakota where the family was living at the time. Cause of death unknown. In 1901 Christ moved with his father , Nels, to Kenmare, ND when he was 9 yrs. old. He graduated from the 8th grade in Kenmare, ND. As a young boy, he worked at his father's business, Nelsen and Poulsen Farm Machinery store in Kenmare. When he was 18 yrs old, his father sent him to business school in Minneapolis, MN where he graduated in bookkeeping and business administration. He was excellent at mathematics, but his love was for mechanical skills. He met his future wife at the Hammerstein's Bakery in Kenmare, ND where she worked. On Nov. 20, 1912 in Minot, Ward County, ND he married Anne Elizabeth Christiansen daughter of Lars Christian Christensen and Louise (Loise) Lizette Dorthea Augusta Walther, both of her parents were from Denmark. Christian worked for his father's business as a bookkeeper. In the early 1920's he learned plumbing from Mr. P.D. Benson, owner of the Central Garage in Kenmare, ND. He became a Plumbing Contractor. Christ put in water and sewer in many homes and places in Kenmare, ND. He was a community leader serving as mayor for a while. In March, 1927, when Christ was 36 years old, he and Virgil Claudious Jorgenson opened a new garage in Kenmare, which was in the former Kinser building that housed the Central Garage. During WWII he served as a clerk in the Kenmare Post Office and also as a relief mail carrier. He was a lifelong member of the Danish Brotherhood. Christ served as an alderman on the Kenmare city council. A former fire chief and member of the Kenmare Fire Department for nearly 40 years he also served as secretary for around 20 years. In the 1950s he actively engaged in heating and plumbing business and where he headed up installing the first plumbing in the city of Kenmare, ND. Christ was a wonderful father who played with his children, was very mechanical... could sing, play accordion and harmonica. He was very good at doing math problems. He loved to joke. He was not a strict disciplinarian. Christ died of a heart attack when he was 59 yrs old while working as a plumbing contractor to build the Renville Bottineau County Hospital in Mohall, ND. The hospital was right across the street from his dau. Helen Nelsen Nelson in Mohall, ND. Preceding him in death were his parents Mary Sophia (Eiby) Nelsen and Nels Nelsen, sister Marie Nelsen and three children: Ezera Albin Nelsen (twin)of Helen Nelsen, Robert Edwin Nelsen and Alice Mildred Nelsen. Surviving him at the time of his death, was wife, Anne, two daughters and four sons. The children are Helen (Ernest) Nelson of Mohall, ND; Anna (Mel) Vale of Portland, OR; Walter (Maud) Nelsen, Crosby; Arthur (Violet) Nelson Tacoma, WA; Capt. Roy Vernon (Ida) Nelsen, Ft. Francis, WY and Kenneth Laverne Nelsen at home in Kenmare, North Dakota.
