Loebel, Pioneer Citizen, Dies Thursday In Business Here Over 38 years, Beginning in 1889; Lacked Less Than Month of Being 80 Years Old Christian D.J. Loebel, who began a business career covering more than 38 years here in 1889, and who lived in Creighton virtually all of the ensuing 59 years, passed away at his home last Thursday morning at 6:30 o'clock. He lacked less than a month of being 80 years old. Death was attributed to a heart ailment. He had been ill a long time. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10, first at the home and then at the Zion Lutheran church, of which he was a founder. The pastor, Rev. C.E. Schaff, officiated. The church was filled with friends, who assembled to pay the pioneer citizen a final tribute. Pallbearers were W.W. Fickling, Jos. P. Ryan, Wid L. Turner, Clark Parkhurst, John Rothenburger and John Boehinger. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. Christian D.J. Loebel was born in Altdorf, Bavaria, Germany, December 17, 1859, the son of George Paul and Anna (nee Strum) Loebel and departed this life on the 23rd day of November, 1939, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 6 days. At the age of 12 years in 1872, he emigrated to the United States with his parents and sisters and located on a farm between West Point and Bancroft. He was confirmed in the Rock Creek Lutheran church between West Point and Bancroft. In October 1880, he together with his parents moved to Creighton. He and his father associating with his brother-in-law in the furniture business. They continued in this partnership for a period of three years, when they sold their interest to Mr. Hoferer. Mr. Loebel with his father then engaged in the general mercantile business under the firm name of Loebel & Son, which association continued until the death of his father in 1907, after which he continued the business under the firm name until 1918, at which time he sold out after having been associated in business for a total period of 38 years. On January 25, 1885 he was united in marriage to Wilhelmine Lindemann. To this union five children were born, his loving wife and two sons, Paul and Chris, having preceded him in death. In his earlier years, Mr. Loebel was active in the civic affairs and life of the community, ever ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He served on the city council in the early days and organized the first band in Creighton. He helped organize the Zion Evangelical Lutheran congregation of this city, being a charter member and serving on the church council from the time of organization in 1886 until 1901. He also assisted his brother-in-law, Rev. Sandrock, in the organization of the Lutheran congregation at Willow Creek. He leaves to mourn his passing, three children, Anna and William of this city and Wilfried of Wakefield, Nebr., two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Sandrock of Bellvue, Iowa and Mrs. Bertha Hefner of Coleridge, Nebr., besides a host of relatives and friends. He was a kind and loving father, devoted to his home and ever mindful of the welfare of his immediate family and will be greatly missed by the children, whom he leaves behind.
