The rites were attended by a large gathering of friends of the deceased, who was held in the highest esteem in this community, where he had resided for many years. Chris G Peterson was born October 10, 1856, in Nos Paa Hedermaken, Norway. He immigrated to American with his parents at the age of ten years. He came to Dakota territory in 1878, locating on a homestead in Brookings county, on which he resided for several years, after which he moved to the city of Brookings where he lived for three years, then came to Elkton, which was his home until the time of his death. He was united in marriage on March 16, 1882, to Miss Julia Johnsgaard, who preceded him in death on August 27, 1927. The following children survive, all of whom were present at the funeral: Mrs C.J. Robertson of Alexandria, Minn.; G.L. Peterson of Omaha; Mrs C.O. Kallestad, of Watertown; Mrs. L.L. Bender, of Cokeville, Wyo.; Carl Peterson, of Beresford; Grant Peterson, of Minneapolis; Mrs. Helen Buck, of Alexandria, Minn.; Mrs. Emroy Kelly of Elkton. One daughter, Mrs. Geo. Maloney, passed away some years ago, and one daughter, Esther, died in infancy. He is survived by eighteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and by one brother Peter G. Peterson, of West Union, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Jacobs, of Los Angeles. Present at the funeral, in addition to the children were P.G. Peterson of West Union, Iowa; Mrs Tower and son and daughter, of Jasper, Minn.; and many friends from Pipestone, Hendricks and Brookings. The deceased was know to all who came in contact with him as a man of sterling character and of a warm, wholehearted friendliness which endeared him to all who were privileged to know him. Because of his inherit desires to be helpful to his fellowmen and friends, he became associated with the Odd Fellow fraternity in 1900, and continued an active and enthusiastic member until his demise. He was honored with the office of treasurer of the local lodge soon after becoming a member and was continued in that office until the suspension of the lodge. Pall bearers were old time neighbors and associates, comprising John Barrett, Oscar Wurst, M.J. Mahowald, J.J. Ehret, Louis Pederson and Frank Dressel. The Elkton Record, February 1938
